I've removed the lathe jig from the CNC and set it back up to sand the legs. The legs get sanded up through 180 grit and then they're ready to for joinery. The design for this table has the legs splayed out 3 degrees on each side. To accomplish this, I made a jig with a 3 degree wedge to accommodate our Festool Domino base plate. The jig is basically just a wood tube, so it also makes use of the top end of the... leg that is still square, so we can orient the joinery exactly 90 degrees from one side to the next while cutting the Domino slots.

The apron pieces are also cut at 3 degrees and then Domino'd to match the slots in the legs. The real trick is how to match the apron ends to the curve of the leg. I've done this two ways in the past - either routing a flat spot on the leg to butt the apron into or routing a curvature on the end of the apron to accommodate the leg. Because the apron butts into the leg at an angle, I opted to route a curved profile on the end of the apron to try to keep things simple. However, this would require routing the leg at the same 3 degree angle. To do this, I used the same jig we used for the Domino slots, just turned on it's side and repurposed as a sled that could ride against the router table fence (check back through our feed to see this in action - we posted a video of this process as a sneak peak for this project). With all of the apron pieces dry fit and the table base temporarily assembled (using sneaky pocket holes placed between the two Domino's), I cut the top of the legs down with a Japanese saw.

The last step was routing dovetail slots for the support battens - these battens will be used to attach the top to the base and will help keep the top flat. All pieces were finish sanded, the individual parts were finished with wipe on Poly (with all the mortises and dovetail slots covered with tape), and then we did the final glue up on the table base. The last photo shows the base completed, with the ash and maple bases that were built at the same time in the background. More on those bases later... # # # # # Posted by Barber WoodworkingHere's the first coat of wipe on Poly on the # . First coat of finish videos never get old, right? # # # # #Posted by Barber WoodworkingFor the next step on the # , we put the legs aside and started to work on the top. The top will be created out of three wide Walnut boards that were all cut from the same tree, so the grain and figure is very consistent. We start by rough milling the material on the CNC to get it flat. Once the boards are flat enough to work we can straight line them and glue them together.

This top has a slight arc on each edge and an under-bevel on the bottom, so we... cut both of these while the top was on the CNC bed. For the under-bevel we cut progressively stepped rabbets that we could then plane and sand down while tracking our depth and progress. Typically with a tabletop or countertop, we will fully sand and finish the bottom first, then attach battens to keep it flat and the finished surface elevated while we flip it back over and finish the top. That way we don't mar up the bottom while sanding the top, and we can just focus on finishing one surface when we start the final finishing process, instead of having to keep flipping the top over between coats. In the last photos, @joelbarnett1025 and I are demonstrating our highly efficient "2 sanders while checking our phones" technique. #nashville #custom #woodworking #midcentury #barberwoodworking #design #furniture Posted by Barber WoodworkingThe turning jig in action. # # # # #Posted by Barber WoodworkingDay 1 on the # : I decided to start with the legs on this table build, and I've been looking for an excuse to make a turning jig for the CNC.

I've made a smaller version of this jig for use with a router sled, but this version would be exclusively made to work with the CNC, and adjustable for lengths up to 36". Once the jig was ready and hooked up to an auxiliary motor, I milled up the leg material (including some ash and maple for other future projects).... The only trick was that for the jig to work the material needs to be at least 2-3" longer than the finished part. The walnut I had was long enough for the part, but not long enough to use in the jig, so I glued and doweled some "extensions" on to each end so I could use these blanks in the jig as well. The last image shows all 12 finished legs. We'll post a video shortly with the jig in action. #nashville #woodworking #midcentury #barberwoodworking Posted by Barber WoodworkingThis weeks project: a very fun mid-century modern styled Walnut dining table. We used the Festool Track saw clamped across both legs to keep them in plane with one another, and cut them at 2 degrees so the frames will taper from 8” wide at the base to 6” wide at the top.

The arched frames then gets Domino’d to the Maple base. Next we used a 6” wide plywood scrap to layout where the base will connect to the redwood burl. T...his allows us do a final design on the upper frame pieces that will join the two arched frames together and provide holes to attach the base to the top. Once these pieces are cut they get joined to the arches via Dominoes and doweled joints. All pieces get final sanded and the arches are glued to the base. Then we painted the base with Black Lacquer. We’ll post finished photos soon, but this piece will be on display tonight during the art crawl - if you’re in town come out and see us from 6-9PM. And check out our feed for the previous steps on this build. #nashville #custom #woodwork #barberwoodworking #bwgallery #bent lamination @festool @festool_usa #festool Posted by Barber WoodworkingThings are shaping up around the shop for Joel's art show.
