Cifra Barber and Beauty Shop opened at 441 S. Warren St., a block up from the soon-to-reopen Hotel Syracuse. The owner and operator is Anthony Cifra, 27, of Liverpool. Cifra said he has been cutting hair at the Shoppingtown Barber Shop at ShoppingTown Mall in DeWitt for the past two years and decided to break out on his own. "I picked downtown because it's right in the middle of everything," he said. His shop has six barber chairs. Cifra said he has hired one barber and is looking to hire more. The shop only cuts men's hair for now, but he said he is looking to expand to include hair cuts and styling services for women.
It's open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shop is located in a building that opened in 1914 and is known as the WFBL building because Syracuse's first radio station once occupied it. Attorney Tom Cerio recently acquired the building and is renovating it into new storefronts and apartments. Just a few years ago, South Warren Street was something of a ghost town, with very high office vacancy rates. But developers, retailers and apartment tenants have begun to move in. The nearby Hotel Syracuse, which has been closed since 2004, is scheduled to reopen later this month as the Marriott Syracuse Downtown with 261 rooms after a $70 million renovation. A block to the north, the former Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield building is undergoing a $20.5 million redevelopment that will include 89 apartments on its upper floors.
