Single pedestal swivel barbers chair on circular chrome and white enamel base with pivoting footrest, white enamelled arms, green leather upholstered circular seat, square backrest with rounded top and padded headrest; This barbers chair was used by male and female politicians from around 1960 in various locations at Provisional Parliament House. The chair was moved to Australian Parliament House in 1988 and remained in service until the early 1990s. Interviews with hairdresser Lizzie Scott highlight the intimacy of working at Provisional Parliament House and the everyday interactions between staff and politicians. The barbers chair was manufactured by Koken Barber Supply Co. in St Louis, Missouri in the United States of America. The company was a large supplier of barbers’ equipment from the late-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. Koken barbers chairs were considered ‘state-of-the art’, being the first to incorporate a hydraulic lifting mechanism to enable them to be easily raised and lowered.

The technology was labour-saving for barbers and became part of the barber shop experience for customers. Art Deco barber chair. Here’s are a couple of  slideshow videos from Custom Barber Chairs on their recent restorations.  Both are Theo A. Kochs chairs.  The videos show several places where the metal has degraded.

In the first video, they switched the original black cushions out for some majestic-looking new red cushions.  There are a couple of pics of the chair in several pieces.  The new chrome looks spectacular! If you would like to get your own project barber chair, or have one restored for you like the one in this slideshow video, you should contact Custom Barber Chairs. Check out their website here. Here’s the second slideshow video, from the same company.  This is an even older chair from the 1920s.  A lot goes in to restoring an old chair like this one.  This one in particular looks to have been in worse shape, which should be expected, considering it is around 30 years older than the chair in the previous video.  Nonetheless, they did a tremendous job of restoring it.Click on the CONTACT US tab and call for parts and sales.  We’ll be showcasing some other restoration projects, but these two stand out at the moment as being superb.  These guys really know what they’re doing, and it shows in the workmanship.

Did I mention the chrome?  Look at it in both videos.  They polish and chrome old, rusted metal, so it looks brand-new again!  If it wasn’t for the style, you’d have no idea that either of these was an antique barber chair. Every last detail, from the upholstery all the way down to the screws, is restored.  This is a time-consuming and sometimes very expensive process.  No wonder these chairs have a high price tag when they are fully restored.  If you have a knack for any kind of restoration, these antique barber chairs will fetch you a nice payday.  Of course you have to find one that needs to be repaired first. Where can you do that?  Well, eBay, for one, has loads of them all the time.  It’s hit or miss as to whether you find one that needs restoration or one that has already been restored.  Generally, though, you can tell by the price.  If it’s less than $1000, chances are the antique chair has not been restored.  Make sure you get all the details before buying.

You wouldn’t want to end up with a rusty chair that’s only a few years old.  If it’s a Koken or a Theo A. Kochs or a Paidar, you don’t have too much to worry about.  Some of the newer chairs, however, can come from companies that have been around for a long time, like Takara Belmont. Good luck if you decide to go the DIY route!  It will keep you busy for quite some time.  If you’d rather just have a nice display piece (or an interesting conversation piece recliner for your living room) and have the money, head on over to Custom Barber Chairs.
