It’s a hot and humid Thursday afternoon in March. The unstoppable rise in temperature is utterly discomforting. That is why I’m at Titan Barbershop in Katipunan — to somehow free up more surface area around my nape and crown so I can maximize whatever cooling effect the summer breeze will bring.

After a few minutes of waiting for my turn to rest my weary ass on Titan’s classic barbershop chair, someone pops the door open. You know the sudden mania caused by a VIP walking into a room? Well, such sudden madness was nonexistent when Kiefer Ravena rolled in. He visits the store frequently enough that’s why no one acts surprised at all. It was like just another sneakerhead visiting the shop. “Oi, si idol na naman!” Ryan, the ultra talented barber excitedly babbles as he exchanges salutes with The Phenom. “Idol”, as Kiefer’s Twitter followers should know, isn’t as much as a greeting by a huge fan than it is a reference by a peer. Besides, Kiefer calls Ryan “idol”. He calls the sales dude in the store “idol”. He practically calls everyone who calls him “idol”, “idol”. It is, I guess, his way of stepping down from the pedestal that people put him on. The soon to be college junior greets me “Sup Kuya Rob,” as he settles beside me in the waiting area.

He is waiting for the new pair of kicks he just purchased, and as it turns out it’s not meant to be added to his growing shoe collection (Kiefer estimates that he has around 150-200 pairs of casual and performance shoes combined). He is copping the pair for ‘someone special’. “Birthday ni Vice (Ganda) eh,” he reveals. “Kaya kumuha ako ng bagong sapatos for him. Medyo malaki paa,” he adds with a giggle. (Before you speculate that there might be ‘something’ between Kiefer and Vice, just know that Kiefer shared the info as comfortably as he could and that the two charismatic personalities have become really good buddies.) Aside from the growth in his brand since showing off his TV hosting potential last November when he appeared in Gandang Gabi Vice, Kiefer’s upper body has noticeably grown bigger too. What used to be a lean and wiry upper body is now beginning to swell and bulge. “Siguro at least ten pounds (of muscle weight) na ang na-gain ko,” he shares.

“Kailangan eh,” he adds while shutting up the critics that say, “Wala nang ginawa si Kiefer sa offseason kung hindi mag Showbiz,” in the process. The Phenom fully understands the challenges that he’ll face next season; that is why he recognizes the need to bulk up and to become stronger. According to Kiefer, the maturation of his body coupled with his frequent visits to the weight room will go a long way in UAAP Season 76, but he thinks that his mental conditioning will be the key for him to be a better player. “As we all know, wala na si Greg (Slaughter) at si Nico (Salva). Malaking bagay yun,” Ravena says. “Kaya this coming season, alam ko na I have to be more aggressive. Malaking responsibility ang binibigay sakin ni Coach Bo (Perasol) eh. I know I have to do more of everything next season.” ‘Doing more’ hasn’t always been Kiefer’s thing. In fact, in his first one and a half seasons in the seniors division, he tended to deflect the spotlight towards his more senior teammates.

He was always mindful of getting Nico Salva enough jumpshot attempts, or getting Greg Slaughter enough touches at the post, or getting shooters like Juami Tiongson, Tonino Gonzaga, and even Ryan Buenafe open from Caidic Country. For me, watching him consciously try not to step on his teammates’ feet, watching him restrain himself from taking games over was like watching Scott Disick resist from getting drunk at a party in Keeping Up With the Kardashians. I always knew that he had the ability to go wild in a basketball court just like I always knew that Scott would relapse and go wild in a bar at one point or another. Finally, there came a point last season when Kiefer decided to wave pick-and-roll plays off, when he told Slaughter and Salva to get out of the way because he wanted to go one-on-one and takeover. That point marked the birth of what I call Kiefer Ravena 2.0, the meaner, more aggressive, slam-dunking version. “I think that was towards the end of the first round or the start of the second nung kinalaban namin yung UE,” he recalls referring to the point when he started to discover his collegiate mean streak.

Medyo relax yung buong team that game and nung nagiging close, kinailangan na talaga.” Kiefer held on to the mean streak and carried on with more fire, capping off the season with a monster Final Four game against DLSU and a championship-clinching jumper off an isolation play in the waning moments of Game 2 of the Finals against UST. This coming season, the 19 year-old guard plans to build on those heroic performances. He plans to be #notnice the way Kevin Durant has become this NBA season — that is minus all the technical fouls. He even promised me on Twitter that he’ll improve his three-point shot while hashtagging the tweet with “#StephCurrynotnice”. It should be no secret that Coach Bo Perasol is constructing the Eagles’ offense around The Phenom and by the looks of it, the former pro coach has practically given him the keys to do whatever he wants (mainly because he trusts Kiefer’s basketball instincts). “I will have more liberty sa plays namin. Mag-uuno (point guard) nga ako tapos si Juami sa dos (shooting guard) para I can initiate the offense.”

Kiefer Ravena is aware of his exponentially bigger role next season. He is also aware that he won’t be able to do everything alone and that his improving teammates will need more reps. “For sure mas marami playing time ni Gwayne (Capacio). Mag-iimprove yan,” he shares. “Yung Newsome (referring to Chris Newsome, the transferee all the way from New Mexico Highlands University) magaling din tapos dahil small ball kami mag-kwakwatro (power forward) siya. And si Von (Pessumal), ang galing niya sa practices namin. Kailangan niya lang ipakita yun next season,” he generously adds. Number 15 spoke with full confidence when I asked him about his teammates, the same sort of confidence that Kobe Bryant…oh wait, I meant LeBron James has on his teammates. A lot of people — including myself — are currently rendering Ateneo’s chances for a sixth straight one bleak. But Ravena just smirks. He likes his coach. He says Coach Bo is fun. He likes his teammates. He likes the team they have now.

He even smiled, and then stared at me without saying a word when I suddenly brought up how the Green Archers are hoarding prized recruits and how they’ve built a surefire contender. “Sobrang excited ko na sa summer, para sa preseason tournaments,” he says while nodding. Kiefer then blurts a few more syllables that I don’t even understand. He quickly stops, ties his tongue, and stares at me. I feel his confidence and his excitement. I also feel that he’d rather not expound on his excitement anymore. It is as if he was telling me, “Abangan mo nalang Kuya Rob. Our talk about all the basketball stuff ends there. We talk about more cool stuff next, like Jasmine Curtis’ impending admission to the Ateneo, or how Coleen Garcia is now single, or how he’s happy with his current girlfriend. But my mind is still firmly affixed to his irrational belief in his team. I was starting to believe, myself. Baka kaya parin magchampion ng Ateneo next season. Our lengthy chat is then suddenly cut short when Kiefer realizes that Vice Ganda’s new pair of kicks has long been ready on the counter.
