Table Lamps and Bedside LightsOne of the men who drove a motorised picnic table down a highway in Scarborough on Sunday told Radio 6PR on Monday that the six-seaters could reach up to 50 kilometres an hour, but were still "pretty safe" and handled "like a go-cart".
Earlier in the day, footage of a group of Perth blokes casually drinking beer while driving two motorised picnic tables down the West Coast Highway went viral on social media. Bewildered drivers and passers-by in the area filmed the men turning right at a set of lights before driving down a pathway.But the driver, who also built the table, said he and his friends only crossed the busy highway to fill their tables up at the petrol station.He said two police officers approached the group while they were there. "We complied with everything they said," he said. "They told the boys that were drinking to tip their liquor out and get rid of it which we did and they said we're not allowed to drive [the picnic tables] on the road and just to push them back across the other side of the road and then we can carry on from there."He said himself and the other driver were sober at the time. Footage shows the men, who took the Aussie phrase "having a roadie" to a whole new level, were all smiles as they drove past confused patrons at a cafe, one offering a thumbs-up.
One woman asked if they had been kicked off the road to which one of the men replied, "we're allowed on the footpath but not the road apparently according to the cops."Several videos of the motorised picnic tables were posted on Facebook on Sunday.A police spokesman said the incident was being investigated and that the men in the videos could face a number of charges including driving an unlicensed vehicle, driving an unroadworthy vehicle and drink driving. "Police are concerned for the safety of those riding on the tables with no protective clothing, especially when on roads alongside motor vehicles," he said."There are overall safety concerns particularly if a traffic incident was to occur, resulting in the persons subjecting themselves to potential injury."The owner of the table said he was building his fourth motorised table creation after a friend who builds them in New Zealand inspired him. The table has a four to five speed clutch, gears, accelerator and brakes. "We tend not to take them on the road very much," the owner said.
"Normally we take them to events like Power Cruise and that kind of thing. "They're pretty safe, you've got something to hold onto and there's a bar across the middle to rest your feet on." On Monday, police were yet to catch up with the group. Police Minister Liza Harvey said the men put themselves and other road users in danger during the Sunday stunt. "I'm sure a lot of people find it very amusing, it does look quite comical when you have a look at it," she said.
