Police say the death of 39-year-old Hilario Paulino Cortez-Vidals marked a violent escalation in what police say is a longstanding feud between two families. The baby shower began Friday night at the Afrika House on Bedford Ave. near Snyder Ave. in East New York. As the event was winding down about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, the gunman fired one round as he stood outside. The bullet pierced a window and hit Cortez-Vidals in the head as relatives scrambled for cover, officials said. Paramedics rushed Cortez-Vidals to Kings County Hospital, but doctors couldn’t save him. Hilario Cortez-Vidals was shot inside the Afrika House Banquet Hall in Brooklyn Saturday morning.
“The shooter and victim are from two different families at the party,” a police source said. “It’s a real Hatfield-McCoy situation.” The gunman remained on the loose late Saturday. Witnesses told police the gunman attended the party and got into an argument with Cortez-Vidals’ teenage son, police sources said. The two got into a fight and the suspect stormed off, only to return with a gun, the sources said. Detectives were questioning several people who attended the baby shower to help identify the shooter. Cortez-Vidals’ nephew said the doomed man spent all of his time working to provide for his family. “When it comes to family, everyone was all together,” said the nephew, who asked not to be named. The victim was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital. The Afrika House always has a certified security guard at events, according to the company’s website. As the sun rose on Saturday, blue-and-yellow crime scene tape was still fluttering outside the catering hall, which was closed for business.
