I had no idea what I would really need, but had to start somewhere. Once our baby arrived and the dust had settled, my husband and I decided it was time to start living a little. We would take our son on little daytrips, and eventually started travelling more and more, even driving 20 hours to Florida every other Christmas. Four kids, six years, and three drives to Florida later, we have figured out what items really help make traveling with our babies easier. Our expertise was really put to the test this past year, though, when we drove to Florida with our 1-year-old twins for the first time. We were a little nervous about managing with four kids, so we did some extra pre-planning. The first thing we decided to do was try to keep some resemblance of routine, even though we were in the car all day.

That meant simulating naptime. We are big fans of white-noise machines (in our case ocean waves) in each of our kids’ rooms. The noise machines do two things: they drown out noise, so if another child is up crying we don’t have to worry about all four kids waking up as well. The sound also signals when it is time to go to sleep — we turn them on before bedtime so that the waves say “time for bed!” before we have to say a word. I must say, we have four excellent sleepers because of this. To mimic naptime in our car, we popped some Duracell batteries into one of our noise machines and brought it with us. It worked like a charm! In fact, not only were our twins lulled to sleep, but our two older kids were as well. We also considered what we could bring to make life easier when we got out of the car. When our twins were infants, they loved the comforting motion of their swings, and I loved having a safe place to put them down. But in reality, we can’t drag our swings with us wherever we go.

Instead, we would pack bouncer chairs for our babies, especially when we were heading to our family’s home for the day. The vibrations from the chair would keep them happy (when they weren’t being passed around and snuggled). Another easy-to-pack item that we would often bring with us was an activity mat that played soft music. The tunes relaxed our babies so much that they would fall asleep mid-play. Some other must-haves are bottle warmers, battery-powered handheld learning toys, and stuffed animals that play a lullaby or white noise. So if I could go back and give myself some advice when creating my registry, I would tell myself to think about what I might need outside of our home, and register for lots of Duracell batteries! You don’t want to get caught without them. Here are some of my favorite on-the-go items: This post is sponsored by Duracell.
