modern day handmade heirlooms. Rebecca Atwood has always loved quilts and their sense of history. Growing up, there was a crazy quilt hanging next to her parent’s dining room table that was from her mom’s side of the family, and she was fascinated with it and its different triangular fabrics. Her mom also made her own quilts for Rebecca and her sisters with big squares in happy colors. Needless to say, she’s always wanted to make her own collection of quilts. These pretty pastel quilts take their inspiration from Rebecca’s personal experiences, and each one is a truly individual piece, hand-sewn in Brooklyn — one of a kind, modern day heirlooms, handmade and compiled from various pieces of fabric from Rebecca’s studio. In the spirit of ‘repurposing’, she wanted to find a way to use the leftover fabric from production of her other collections, so they wouldn’t go to waste, and ultimately create a handmade, one-of-a-kind heirloom with a unique sense of quirkiness. whether they cover your bed, hang on the wall, or even draped over the back of your sofa, rebecca’s quilts will enhance any space.

Graham and Green Moroccan Leather Pouffe: £130, grahamandgreen.co.uk There are lots of Moroccan-style pouffes out there but these ones are the particularly eye-catching; hand-stitched in Marrakech, they're made using hand-dyed leather and decorated with embroidery, they come in a range of vibrant colours as well as silver and gold tones. Somewhere between a floor cushion and a low pouffe, this handsome Scottish-made stag-print piece looks as if it's made to be plonked down in front of a roaring log fire - preferably accompanied by a dram of whisky.

The price reflects the fact it’s larger than most on the list at 75cm diameter. We love these eye-catching geometric-patterned pieces from the independent Scottish designer. The patchwork is made from soft leather and hand-dyed cotton satin and you can choose from a range of colour combos. You can remove the bean bag liner and top it up with more polystyrene beans if you like your seating extra firm. 4. Anthropologie Large Diamond-Weave Pouffe: £248, anthropologie.eu Created in India and handwoven from recycled fabrics, this vibrant piece will add some colour to your room without  being over-bearing. At 65cm square and 25cm high, it's taller than a cushion but still fairly low to the ground. If you want something studier than a polystyrene-filled pouffe (as most on this list are) Made’s upright Leila has a birchwood frame with soft padding. You can choose between this spring-like floral print or a woven cotton piece in sunset colours. Anyone who likes the look of a knitted cotton pouffe but don't know how to choose from the many there are around, these ones, available in eight vibrant colours, are good value for their 50cm diameter.

Our pick is this attention-grabbing mustard. Inject some on-trend geometrics into your sitting room for not much money with this chevron-pattered piece from George's good-value home range. It's softer than some but makes a decent extra seat or footrest. Here's another low pouffe that will work just as well as a foot stand as an occasional seat. Made from a wool mix in a contemporary diamond-print design, it's a quality, sturdy piece for under a hundred pounds. 9. Habitat Lowe Pouf: £80, habitat.co.uk From Habitat’s latest collection, this multi-coloued pouffe was handwoven in India and will add a bit of texture to your sitting room set up. Now for something completely different, these large white pouffes are made from recycled sail covers which means each one is unique. Hand-sewn in France, you get a label with it telling you’re the sail and boat where it came from. Makes a good pressie for sailing fans. Handily, you can easily unzip the bag to be refilled.
