New rules set by recycling facilities dictate that glass must be collected separately from other recyclables. Decatur residents will need two bins – one bin for glass only, and one for paper, plastics and metal. Residents are responsible for providing the second bin, and there are no stipulations regarding type or color, though it should be 18 gallons or smaller. Your glass will likely be picked up at a different time than your other recyclables. If you see that your mixed recycling has been collected, this does not mean that your glass collection was missed. Have all trash, yard waste, and recycling placed at the curb by 7:30 am. Remove all lids and tops from glass containers and place them in your mixed recycling bin. Do not place any recyclables in plastic bags. Mixed recycling that contains glass cannot be collected. Read more about glass recycling here.  Download a copy of our recycling poster here. Recycling Services for Residents The City of Decatur manages waste collection for approximately 6,000 households.

Recycling services for these homeowners are provided through a contract with Latham Home Sanitation Company. Residential recycling is collected on the same day as your garbage and yard waste. Garbage, recyclables, and yard trimmings must be ready by 7:30 am on collection day. Collector arrival time will vary according to many conditions, but no collector will arrive before 7:30 am. For more information on solid waste collections click here. A list of acceptable materials is provided below. Non-glass materials collected by Latham Home Sanitation and Decatur Public Works are taken to Pratt Industries in East Point, Georgia. Glass recyclables go to a recovery facility called Strategic Materials in College Park, Georgia. What Can I Recycle? Place these in a separate bin: Glass Bottles and Containers No ceramics, mirrors, etc. These items may be combined in a separate bin: Paperboard (example: tissue boxes) Paper (white and color) Plastic/wax coated cartons (example: juice cartons)

Plastic Bottles and Containers Must be labeled with a recycling logo and any number 1 through 7 Yellow or white plastic milk cartons Plastic soda and water bottles Plastic tubs (e.g., margarine, sour cream, etc.) Black plastic planting trays and flower pots Styrofoam with a recycling logo Tin cans (vegetable, soup, beans, cat food, etc.) Please note, if recycling service for your commercial or multi-family building is provided by a private company, contact them directly because their rules may be different. Disposable drink cups (e.g., Solo cups, Starbucks cups, etc.) Styrofoam and/or packing peanuts Electronic devices (save these items for Electronics Recycling Day) Used napkins, paper towels, or tissue Wrappers with metallic material How Do I Get a Bin? Residents have access to a free 18-gal. recycling bin (standard green bins) through the city's contract with Latham Home Sanitation. This bin is for use with comingled paper, plastic, and metal products.

Residents are responsible for providing the second bin for glass recycling, and any type or color is acceptable, though it should be 18 gal. To request a bin call Decatur Public Works at 404-377-5571. Hours of operation are 8 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. For customers who prefer a larger container, 95-gallon blue carts may be purchased upon request from Latham Home Sanitation or at Intown Ace Hardware store on Scott Boulevard. Residents may also purchase their own recycling bins at a home improvement store. Be sure to select a size that can be reasonably lifted by pick-up crews, and that the bins are clearly marked. Recycling Services for Multi-Family Dwellings In 2007, the Decatur City Commission approved an amendment to the solid waste ordinance to provide better accessibility for recycling for multi-family residents of the city. The ordinance affects approximately 2,600 multi-family dwelling units within the city limits by requiring that property owners and condominium associations provide recycling services to their residents that include at least four materials to recycle such as paper, glass, metal, and plastic.

The purpose of the amendment was to provide residents living in multi-family dwelling properties similar recycling services to those living in single-family homes. Please note, if recycling service for your commercial or multi-family building is provided by a private company, contact them directly for an updated list of acceptable recyclable materials. Although commercial and multi-family buildings are not required to use City of Decatur as their waste hauler, the Public Works Dept. is pleased to be able to provide service to these properties, and we pride ourselves on excellent customer service.
