Designed by Thomas Telford around 1820, they were built at approximately 5 mile intervals as a means of recuperating some of the cost of his Menai Suspension Bridge. Five were originally built on Anglesey (of which four survive) and another ten on the mainland on the A5 to Shrewsbury. The tollhouse are all two story buildings, octagonal in shape with two single story wings. The tollhouses are (in order of the photos) situated at Penrhos, Caergeiliog, Gwalchmai/Mona and Llanfair P G. The final photo of this essay is the ‘Toll to be taken’ on the tollhouse at Llanfair P G. All the images were taken on my i-phone on Saturday 21st January 2017. P
