Got an idea for a door? Deep down inside, everyone loves a muscle car. They’re not well-rounded machines and most of them aren’t even fast by today’s standards, but prices remain sky-high for these big-block bruisers. Buying a muscle car on a budget requires a bit of lateral thinking. Yes, you want a 1967 Mustang fastback, but everyone in the world wants that car and they’re priced accordingly. A muscle car is classically defined as being an American compact or midsized car manufactured between 1964 and 1974 with a large V8 engine. We’re going to have to bend that definition only slightly for the cars to slide under $5,000. But as we’ve seen before, owning a classic car can be cheaper than you think. That’s right, you can buy a shiny, yellow 1969 Ford Mustang for just $4,500 from Medicine Hat, Alta. This one looks great in a fresh, if somewhat sloppy, yellow coat of paint. The range and depth of the aftermarket for these cars is unparalleled and you can build this one any way you want it.

Powered by a 302 V8, this is a great starting point for someone who wants a classic Mustang for cheap. This 1970 Buick Skylark is available in Vulcan, Alta., for $5,000. The Skylark is based on the same chassis as the contemporary Chevy Chevelle and the two have a very similar look. Despite this, the Skylarks never achieved the same level of fame that the Malibu/Chevelle did and prices remain sane for these cars. This one has a very 1970s brown on brown colour combination and is powered by a 350 cubic-inch Buick V8. We’d find some Magnum 500 wheels and cruise all summer long. It has four doors, eight cylinders and it’s available for $4,000 in Calgary. This car has a mellow 307 cubic-inch V8 but looks very clean inside and out. These cars can fit big-blocks with ease, so the horsepower potential is only limited by your wallet. The seller is also including a partially built 350 V8 to install at your leisure. If you’ve ever wanted a sleeper, it’s hard to be sleepier than a four-door Nova with “307” badges.

The putrid green interior only adds to the appeal. Scholars have debated for years on the true meaning of the name “442.” It is generally accepted, however, that it stands for a 4 barrel carb, 4 speed manual transmission and 2 exhaust tips. This one is available in Saskatoon for $3,500. Now obviously, this car needs work. It’s pictured in a field, it doesn’t run, and its original engine has been replaced with an Oldsmobile 350 V8. Despite its rough appearance, the 442 looks very complete and depending on the state of the rust, this could be a great restoration candidate. Especially if you can manage to find the original engine! How can you not love a white and brown two-tone interior? The stripes on the side leave no question as to what decade this car was repainted in. This 1977 Pontiac Ventura features a 305 cubic-inch V8 and is offered for $4,800 from Port Hope, Ont. The Ventura is essentially a Pontiac Nova and these can be found very cheaply. You won’t win many races with the 305, but, as always with American cars of the era, horsepower upgrades are limited only by your budget.
