We estimate that this hardware may be more than 150 years old. The string permits occupants of any of the four floors of the building to open the entry door without having to descend the stairs. At above right is the door latch assembly for the main entry to a Tlaxcala Mexico hacienda that was constructed for Cortes. We estimate that the door and its hardware date from the 1850's.
