When you need it, it’s an extremely well-made, beautifully designed chair that has a large, dishwasher-safe tray or works with breakfast bars and islands; when you don’t need it, it folds flat enough to tuck into a closet or behind a door. Consider yourself warned: if you have a standard-height table, you won’t be able to pull the nano right up to it, sans tray — it’s too high.

Although it comes with some sticker shock, this multi-stage system will give you powerful bang for your buck. It’s more than just a high chair; it’s a bouncer that sits in the frame so your baby can share mealtime with you anytime—long before he ever tries solids. It later converts to a high chair, then toddler and kid chair, keeping your precious little one seated at ideal table height for years.

In the minimalist, multifunctional high chair category there are some real gems and it’s hard to choose just one. But coming out slightly ahead of the competition is the Keekaroo Height Right. When used with the infant insert ($70), which worked well even with a 2.5 year old, it will take your child from intro to solids at six months right through to high school — and beyond — supporting up to 250 pounds. The only downside is that there are but two wood stains available.

The Dutch get a lot of things right, and design is one of them. The Nuna ZAAZ offers one of the easiest mechanisms to raise and lower a high chair seat as your baby grows (or you simply switch tables). Parents in cramped or design-savvy spaces will appreciate this chair’s relatively small footprint and forward-looking aesthetics. The included tray snaps on and off with ease, and once the seat pad is removed when your child is old enough for a proper chair, you’d never know it was once a baby seat.
