Smart Windows for Improved Security and Energy Efficiency Technological advancements have resulted in a new breed of ‘smart windows’ offering consumers enhanced security and maximum energy efficiency. Leading window and door manufacturer Andersen and technology producer Honeywell have collaborated to develop a state-of-the-art system known as VeriLock, which places Honeywell’s 5800-series of wireless sensors within the locking mechanisms of a select group of Andersen products. “Windows and doors are a home’s first layer of protection for both comfort and security,” says Holly Boehne, senior vice president of research, development, and innovation at Andersen. “It’s important to make that layer ‘smarter’ for added protection to give peace of mind to homeowners.” The VeriLock sensors are available on Eagle Axiom casement and awning windows, Talon double-hung windows, and Ascent hinged French patio doors and sliding patio doors. In addition to security, VeriLock technology can help reduce home energy use by notifying homeowners when doors and windows are unlocked.

Andersen is also spotlighting energy efficiency with its new SmartSun solar control glass, an option available throughout the company’s product line. The SmartSun glass is designed to reject solar heat while admitting visible light. “Glass technology is an important factor in the overall performance of windows and doors,” explains Shawn Aherns, senior marketing manager at Andersen. “Today’s homes have more windows, and therefore glass, so it’s important to design products with high thermal efficiency. We want homeowners to enjoy their windows and save energy at the same time.” Andersen offers yet another glazing option designed to help keep your windows clean. The company’s High Performance Low E4 glass features an innovative exterior coating activated by sunlight. The coating reduces water spots by up to 99 percent, helps reduce dirt build-up, and promotes faster drying.
