Memory foam has gained popularity thanks to its ability to provide personalized conditions for every sleep type. You'll sleep comfortably whether you prefer a firm or soft mattress. Learn more with this memory foam mattress topper fact sheet. Memory Foam Mattress Toppers: Place them on top of a firm mattress: Memory foam mattress toppers ease pressure on the body's pressure points but aren't always supportive or firm, so be sure to put them on top of a firm, supportive mattress. You'll get the best of both worlds with a comfortable mattress that still provides support.

Allow them to air out: As with memory foam mattresses, give your memory foam mattress topper 72 hours after opening to air out and expand before you use it for the first time. By doing this, you can ensure that the first night sleeping on your new mattress topper will be supremely comfortable. Consult your doctor: If you have a medical condition that requires the use of a special kind of mattress, consult your medical care provider before purchasing a memory foam mattress topper. If you regularly visit a chiropractor, consult him about changing your mattress topper and the impacts it could have on your health. Three great qualities: Memory foam mattress toppers are hypoallergenic, environmentally safe, and resistant to dust mites. That means that you'll be able to sleep comfortably without ever having to worry about waking up sneezing and sniffling. Hot and cold: Memory foam mattress toppers are temperature-sensitive and will become denser in the cold and softer in warmer temperatures.

Some people get warm on memory foam mattress toppers, especially if they live in warmer climates. A gel memory foam mattress topper will stay cooler than a traditional one; the infusion of gel beads in the foam allows for better air flow without any reduction in support. MDI: Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, or MDI, is a chemical used to cure memory foam, assuring cohesiveness. Originally thought to pose health risks, this chemical has been tested and proven safe for use in memory foam mattress toppers. Some new memory foam, also known as visco-elastic polyurethane foam, emits odors that may be bothersome at night when your face is so near the mattress, pillow or mattress topper made from the foam. Some memory foam products, such as mattresses and mattress toppers, are treated with flame-retardants to comply with federal standards regarding mattress flammability. These chemicals, also known as volatile organic compounds, "off gas" or escape from the foam, causing odor that dissipates over time. Employ a few tactics to help the odor disappear more quickly. Air It Out Remove new memory foam from the outer plastic packaging surrounding it. If possible, place the foam outdoors for at least a few hours on a dry, non-humid day. A porch will suffice if you'd rather not leave it out in the open. If you're unable to take the foam mattress, pillow or topper outdoors, prop it up in a room against a chair or wall so it ventilates from all sides. Open the windows and turn on a window fan drawing air out of the room.

The longer the foam product airs out, the less noticeable the odor will be. Baking Soda Solution Baking soda -- the same type used to deodorize a refrigerator -- also helps de-fume memory foam. After airing out the memory foam, sprinkle baking soda all over the mattress, topper or pillow and allow it to sit for an hour or so. Vacuum away the baking soda with an upholstery brush attachment. Apply the baking soda directly on the foam object, rather than on a sheet or pillowcase, for best results. Room Refresher A brand new memory foam mattress may make the entire room smell for a few days. Place a bowl of white vinegar in the room to help remove the odor from the air; as the mattress off-gases, airborne odors will be absorbed. If you don't care for the smell of vinegar, place the vinegar in the room and leave it out all day while you're away, then dump the vinegar down the drain before bedtime. Vinegar also helps deodorize drains. Keep It Fresh Mattresses, pillows and bedding absorb sweat simply from sleeping on them;

memory foam is no different. Keep the mattress smelling its best by letting it air out for a few hours when it is time to wash the bedding. Remove all bed linens and let the mattress breathe; if the room has a ceiling fan, run it on "high" speed to help dry any moisture in the foam. Sprinkle baking soda over the mattress as it airs out, then vacuum away the powder with an upholstery brush attachment. One trick we have learned is that the Topper Pad seems to air out more quickly with a fanSo we put the pad over a chair with the fan blowing on it, and turn the pad over in the morning to air out both sides equally. This takes care of the odor, for the most part, within a day or two and then it should be ready to

go on your bed. After you begin to use the Topper Pad, you can take care of any residual odor by airing it out in the same manner during the day and then putting the pad back on your bed at night. In our experience, this takes care of any such residual odor in a few days. Another option is airing the Topper Pad outside for a day or two. Many customers tell us this works well, but of course you need to be careful about any dirt or moisture outside that may damage the Topper Pad.
