Flocked Air Beds Most flocked beds are meant for use when you're traveling or camping. The mattress typically has a bottom made of a thick or extra durable vinyl for exterior conditions, such as on the ground or inside a tent. The mattress top is made of a special flocked velvet-like coating that eliminates the need for sheets, though most people use this air bed with sleeping bags anyway. It's always a good idea to set a tarp on the ground to place the bed upon, to prevent punctures from sharp rocks or twigs. Inflatable Air Mattress Not much different from a flocked air bed, an inflatable air mattress is primarily designed for indoor use. While it can include a flocked top, depending on the model you buy, an air mattress for indoor use usually is sized so standard sheets fit the mattress, making the flocked top unnecessary.
It also typically does not contain a thicker vinyl on the bottom, as it is designed to sit directly on the floor. These beds may be taller than many flocked air mattresses, to simulate the height of a real bed, but it depends on the model. Manufacturing Differences Because flock air beds and inflatable mattresses come from a variety of manufacturers, the ways the beds are made also differ by manufacturer. Both of these inflatable mattresses may contain long tubular chambers or could use patented vinyl coils inside the mattress. Some flock air beds are a single mattress layer thick or low profile, as are many inflatable mattresses, while others have two layers, which makes the mattress sit higher off the ground. Built-In Pumps Some of these air mattresses, with or without flocked tops, come with built-in pumps. These pumps need a power source, usually standard household electricity. But the beds made for traveling or camping usually have a pump that runs off 12-volt power. For inflatable mattresses meant for use indoors, some of the built-in pump beds also have a comfort level setting to adjust the firmness of the mattress.
Some beds also have a built-in pillow or raised head so you don't have to bring pillows along.
