There are several health related factors that affect the trucking industry. Obesity is one, according to a study from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), over-the-road (OTR) truck drivers are almost twice as likely to be obese, as compared to other industries. As a matter of fact the top industry related health issues are:Find Cheapest Truck Stop on Your RouteOptimize Fuel Purchase and Make up to $300 Truck/Month.CLICK TO MAKE MORE

Now of course some of these are actually preventable, if you take the right steps. I’ve wrote an article a while ago with tips for truck drivers health. Quit smoking, reduce your exposure to the sun, and take regular bathroom breaks. These all seem simple enough but you would be surprised just how many people won’t take these simple measures. Smoking can actually be the link that directly influences, if not causes, the others. With that said, to help prevent heart attacks and strokes, quit smoking is the first step. Next, watch what you eat. Even though getting a good balanced meal, all the time, might not be easy there are still plenty of ways to eat right. Instead of getting the greasy burger every night eat more chicken, vegetables and fruits. Cut back on the carbonated soft drinks. An occasional salad wouldn’t hurt, and no a 2000 calorie taco salad doesn’t count. In regards to strokes, remember the acronym FAST: F – Face – (Does your face droop when you smile?)

A -Arms – (Does one drift down when you raise your arms?) S – Speech – (Does the voice sound slurred or odd?) T -Time – (If these symptoms are present call 911 immediately) As for obesity, exercise is very important, according to the American Heart Association all a person really needs is at least 150 minutes (2 ½ hours) per week, or about 20 minutes a day! Then of course getting a healthy diet is important, as mentioned above. But what do all these tie into? They connect to the number one thing on the list sleep deprivation. This actually makes getting the proper sleep and proper rest two of the most important things a person can do for oneself. I know you’re thinking, “aren’t they the same thing”? Have you ever gotten some sleep and woke up feeling more tired than when you went to bed? Without proper rest your body and mind won’t function as is should. Your reaction time will be slower. Simply put, sleep and rest is when your body truly replenishes itself, heals itself.

Just like a bad night’s sleep can leave you feeling tired and irritable a good night’s rest will have the reverse affect. Therefore, try to always get plenty of rest. So what is one of the key things to consider in regards to a good night’s sleep for one truck driver? Getting a good truck mattress, of course is one of the key things that matters. Just like your home mattress, your truck mattress should be the right one for you. Here are a few simple steps to help you choose a truck mattress that is right for you. Of course there is only so much room in the truck. Even some of these newer trucks that look like they were designed by the fast food industry, they are supersized! So many now come with all the comforts of home that really you could almost live in your truck. Even with all that you still need to find a truck mattress which is suitable for your height. You don’t want to be sleeping with your feet dangling off the end, do you? Now this is a little different, because anyone who has been in a sleeper cab knows they are not designed the same as a home bed.

But there are still things to consider when choosing a truck mattress. If you get a cheap foam mattress, two things will happen. It will wear out quickly and it will smash down. Then you will feel like you’re sleeping directly on the floor. There are numerous types available and they can range in price. But try to get the best truck mattress for your body type. If this seems to be a problem, it might not be the mattress… Just like every other key part on your truck, from the tires to the mirrors to the truck bad size and all parts (Important parts of truck equipment) in between, the truck mattress needs to be maintained. For health reasons and for general safety concerns the mattress needs to be properly cared for. The good thing about truck mattresses now is their design. They are actually designed for the trucker in mind. They are hypoallergenic and stain resistant. Just follow the manufacturer’s suggestion for the proper care of your truck mattress. Though I touched on this, I can’t stress the importance of cleanliness, especially in smaller areas.

One of great things about the truck mattresses that are available today are the sheets. Sheets are customized to fit the truck mattress, now of course some will be designed for particular models, but it can be easy enough to find the right size. With Laundromats at most all the larger truck stops and motels, things just get more and more like home all the time. Everyone is a little different when it comes to comfort levels. Some people like a very firm truck mattress while others prefer a soft almost cushiony feel. Remember you don’t want to get a truck mattress that is too soft, that is bad for your back. If you wake up feeling sore, that means you didn’t get the correct rest and it may affect the rest of your day. When picking the truck mattress you do have several options to consider, air beds, innerspring, memory foam, latex and the list goes one, heck you might even find a waterbed! But remember it all goes back to getting the best night’s sleep. Metal coils for example can be noisy.

Other designed are prone to sagging. So if at all possible test a few out before deciding. Although I just suggested testing it before you purchase your truck mattress that might always be the best option, because many times you can look online and find some great deals and discounts. Many times the specialty shops and outlets offer huge discounts, especially when they are changing out their models. You might find a discontinued model with huge cut in price. When picking a truck mattress quality really does matter. That doesn’t mean it has to be the most expensive. Instead it just means the one with the best rating. Visit the product reviews and speak with other truckers to find out what type of truck mattress they have. Perhaps they can even give you some tips on where to shop. After all you’re going to sheets, pillows, and blankets designs and materials that you prefer. This is very important. Well if you bought a truck mattress that just isn’t comfortable or perhaps isn’t the right fit for your model of truck, you need to be able to return it.

Now, if you bought something on sale or a closeout item, well this might be an issue. But still try and get one with either a money back guarantee or at least will allow you to exchange it. Remember to keep your receipt as well. Always get fitted sheets for your truck mattress. They are great because they won’t come up while you’re sleeping. Flannel is nice for those cold winter nights. Cotton always feels good as well. But make sure you have enough to be able to change out your sheets, have some extra blankets as well. One other thing that people don’t think about is their pillow. Make sure to get a good pillow that will properly support your neck while you sleep. By some estimates it is thought perhaps 1 out of 10 truck drivers don’t get proper rest while out on the road. The University of Pennsylvania conducted a study and found that almost 13% of truckers regularly skimped on their sleep. This can create a very dangerous condition for all drivers on the road. If there was an accident and it was determined that lack of sleep was the cause, it can drastically affect the driver and your company’s safety rating as well.
