COMMERCIAL, RETAIL : GLASS MAGAZINE AWARDS 2013 Panoramic Doors developed Magnaline, a patentpending hardware system engineered to simplify and improve the operation and performance of its folding glass doors.

Panoramic’s folding glass door systems consist of independent panels that sit and travel along a single track to either end of the opening; Magnaline then engages, allowing the panel to swing open and stack to the previous panel. The doors are bottom-rolling, which minimizes the weight on the header, structural costs and operational problems, according to the company. All of the Magnaline operational hardware is concealed within the frame, giving the folding door system elegant clean lines; the floating panels are the only elements visible. By reducing the amount of hardware through the advent of the Magnaline system, Panoramic Doors was able to cut down door system manufacturing costs and lead times, the company says. Window & Door Magazine Magnaline Panoramic Doors Folding System, Panoramic Doors The Challenge: Panoramic Doors sought a way to create a budget-friendly folding door system. The Winning Solution: The resulting folding door system uses Panoramic’s Magnaline hardware (a winner in this year’s Most Innovative Door Component category) that “eliminates the need for hinges, bolts and locks, which in turn, reduces hardware costs and man-hours.

The end result is a more affordable system,” says Magnaline designer Alan Rees, CEO and owner of Magnaline and Panoramic Doors. The Panoramic Doors folding system has a series of bottom-track supported rolling panels that travel independently from each other along a single track. This minimizes weight stress on headers. The first panel is a fixed door and can be on either side of the opening or on both sides. Independent panels slide to either end, click into place and then convert from sliding to swing panels and stack against the previous panels, which reduces the amount of space needed to operate the door. Several options are available, including a system with an unlimited number of panels to fit any span, as well as a system that offers users the ability to open and close one panel at a time. Doors come in aluminum/aluminum, aluminum/wood-clad, woodclad/ wood-clad, vinyl/aluminum-clad and vinyl/wood-clad. The PVC model is a fully welded outer-frame with the option of nail-fin or flush-fin to satisfy track building demands and facilitate replacement.

The Challenge: Panoramic Doors wanted to make it easier for users to operate folding doors while at the same time reducing the manufacturing costs for those doors. “The greatest obstacle to producing an affordable wide-span door system was the high cost associated with the excessive hardware,” says Alan Rees, designer and CEO of Magnaline. The Winning Solution: The supplier developed Magnaline, multi-panel door hardware that uses magnetic technology to guide, control and lock into place each panel as it slides and swings open. “By using magnetic technology, I was able to control and simplify functionality,” Rees explains. The door system works this way: The first panel is fixed on either side (or both sides) of the opening. Second and subsequent panels slide up to the first panel, and then click into place. Each panel then swings open and stacks parallel to the previous panel. Magnaline hardware allows panels to travel and operate on the bottom track, minimizing stress on the header.

All operational hardware is concealed and works from within the frame to give the system a clean look and protect the hardware from the weather. Concealment also helps protect users from possible injury. Using Magnaline, Rees says, considerably reduces the amount of hardware which lowers manufacturing cost and lead times. “The result is a system with unique features and clean lines that is functional, easy to operate and affordable. It has completely exceeded my expectations,” Rees says. I was originally looking at Lx Cxxxxxx doors, but stumbled upon Panoramic. These doors are exactly what I had been looking for to completely open my living room on to my terrace, and without the ugly hinges that folding-style doors have. These have the clean, streamlined look that I became accustomed to while living in Europe. The door arrived exactly as I had specified and the build quality was just like in the showroom. The installation was very professional and we are very happy with the result.

9 months in, the door looks like new and I just ordered another for the other side of the house. I’m so relieved that I found these guys! My client, Michele wanted the indoor outdoor concept because she and her husband like to entertain large groups of people. I had heard of Panoramic Doors but was concerned that the cost might be beyond my clients budget. I showed them the Panoramic Doors online demo and they were immediately hooked; they had to have these doors. I contacted Kornel Galambos at the Panoramic Doors – Los Angeles location and he answered all of my questions and provided timely, professional advice. I was able to provide my client two 3-panel doors for the 9′ openings and two 4-panel doors for the 12′ openings for about the same price as we had budgeted for the Mxxxxx Txxxxxx sliders, but we went from a 6′ (66%) and 6′ (50%) openable space to a 8.5′ (95%) and a 11.25′ (94%) openable space. So now I look like a hero to my clients and Kornel Galambos at Panoramic Doors is saved to my favorites list for future projects.
