XXX is one of those movies you don’t want to think about because you would dismiss it right from the start. Instead, you should just try to enjoy the action. That’s because the premise is ridiculous. Vin Diesel plays Xander Cage an Internet star and stuntman who is picked by the National Security Agency’s (NSA) Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) to be a covert operator after several agents were killed. The fact that the NSA uses wire taps and satellites doesn’t matter, nor the fact that if a bunch of their operatives were killed going to someone with no experience and training like Xander would be stupid. That’s what I mean when I say don’t analyze the movie, just watch it. Of course, that was also supposed to be part of the charm of this new action film. People had seen James Bond types for decades and now they were going to get a smart talking, wise cracking Gen Xer in Xander. It succeeded at some things and failed at others in this attempt at a new spy action film.

To its credit XXX isn’t all serious. It’s willing to poke fun of itself. That’s seen when Xander is picked up by Gibbons. Twice he gets shot by a tranquilizer dart because they don’t want to deal with him. Then Danny Trejo shows up as a Colombian drug lord and Xander and two other NSA trainees can’t stop laughing at him. There are plenty of other examples.

At the same time, they can’t get away from the spy genre. Hence Xander is sent on a mission to Prague and gets a whole slew of gadgets and an expert to explain them just like James Bond.

The director Rob Cohen had worked with Diesel on the first Fast and the Furious film. That led to some a GTO muscle car being made Xander’s car during his mission.

Other times XXX can’t help but be bad. Xander is given X-Ray binoculars and in one scene he stares at a brick wall. Then in the climax he’s trying to disarm a torpedo with deadly gas on it and right before he stops it he says, “Welcome to the Xander zone,” which was the catchphrase from the videos he used to make as a civilian.

Overall, XXX is very up and down. You can’t take the start nor the end seriously. The middle played some fun with the genre.

They sent wrong version...

So im probably not the only one, but my copy from Amazon was the old movie (2002) even though it was clearly labled as the anniversary edition here. I noticed this movie has same product page for anniversary and 2002 version only later on. So for anyone reading to be clear im only focusing on the anniversary edition and its improvements, not really much of the movie itself. I attached pictures of diff between original (2002) and the anniversary edition, which I had to buy from Best Buy.

Context on 2002 version

Just for some short context the last time I played this movie (2002) was around launch of PS3, this was actually one of my first bluray movies, next to talladega nights. Fast foward to 2017, I get a new soundbar to test the 2002 version out like a newb, not knowing anything about audio formats like dolby or dts. And immediately felt underwhelmed, expecting the punchy bass of the rammstein intro to blast through my soundbar with immersion that simply wasn't there. So I did some research and found the 2002 version to be a half baked port like alot of blurays at the time introduced to push the bluray formats library count. It plays a standard stero sound (PCM) w/ no immersion whatsoever, sligthly higher visual fidelity then dvd, but with not much else going for it.

15th Anniversary

Later on that same day later I stumble onto the review on bluraydotcom of the anniversary edition after reading up on the diff audio formats. I finally found what I was looking for and ordered it on the spot. 1 day of prime shipping later I pick it up, open it and find the same 2002 version I already own inside. I quickly filed for a return, and went to BestBuy which coincidentally had actual anniversary edition for about the same price.

Sound

Quickly put it in my PS4 and let it play, Fire at Will(feuer frei) booms in the intro of movie and fills up room w/ serious bass. Instant night and day difference. Even scenes with multiple things going on have distinct and clear audio, loud, but not drowning the other action on screen. Vin Diesels dialogue sounds that much better as well. Because his voice is naturally deeper it kicked up bass from my subwoofer and made him louder and more clear then other actors, lol.

Video Quality

Not much changes, its more of a slight bump in sharpness, skin on characters looks clear and more HD..ish.

Veredict

For a remastered edition, this is definetly worth buying again if you already own 2002 version. The movie overall is very much dated in plot and replayability, outside of soundtracks. Its fun as an over the top action movie and not much else. But, if your into audio(or Rammstein) its definetly a reference piece for your home theatre or if u just have a really nice soundbar :)

P.S: I havent finished everything in new edition, just wanted to get review of main movie out, might add detail about extras in the movie later. Also, for reference my soundbar is Sony MT300.
I got this version to upgrade the original Blu-Ray release of this title, which was really a half-effort by Sony to get releases out the door (MPEG2 encoding, 16bit PCM audio). It was "fine" but really wasn't representative of the Blu-Ray format. This is a good bandwidth H264 release, with a good DTS-HD soundtrack, and is definitely an improvement over the original release.
This was good to waste a bit of time with. I like the premise of a spy that is on the other end of the spectrum from Bond. Horrible accents though.
If you're looking for a deep, meaningful flick, skip this, you're in the wrong part of the store anyway. But if you're a fan of non-stop action, great stunts and a watchable, often witty script, then this is prime stuff. The opening secene is a direct strike at the passing of James Bond to the new age an extreme sports, grunge spy. There's lot's of action, but script is surprisingly free of the cursing and nudity that has become so prevelent in most films of the genre. Instead, it stylishly focuses on the story of an extreme action fanatic forcably recruited into working as an undercover agent for the NSA sent underground into work in a Euro trash/terrorist cell. Samuel L. Jackson does a fine job with XXX version of M and there's even a young Q replete with all the gadgets. A classic GTO is the tricked out car of choice. The story may be predictable, as most of this genre is, but this is a good a ride as any - much like the blue GTO. And women (including me) can enjoy Vin Diesel, tatoos and all. He could use some acting lessons from Sean Connery or Nick Cage, but he is great to watch. All in all, just a good way to escape for a time.
Boy I tell ya, either folks like this film or they hate it. To be honest with ya, I've bought both versions of this DVD. The original SE and this new URDC 2-disc version. (Skipped the Superbit, obviously.) And also to be honest, I haven't watched this film since the original DVD came out in Dec. 2003. I bought this new version for basically two reasons. One, the build-up to the hype for the sequel, and two, was curious as to what the additional 8 minutes of footage would bring. Again, to be honest, I couldn't tell you what or where the new footage is without doing a comparison with the old disc.

In any case, I was pleasantly surprised by this new cut. Has the new footage fleshed out some of the plots and characters? I'm not really sure, but the movie actually flows a bit better with the new footage whatever it is. So if you didn't get the first disc, and you're in any way remotely interested into getting into the xXx franchise, go ahead and pick this set up.

Now then, as for my title of this review, and my 4-star rating... As another reviewer so eloquently stated, that this film is a bit of a new take on the old traditional James Bond film with the modern Playstation-era X-Game scene thrown in. And whether you're into the X-Games or X-Treme Sports or not, it actually does work, that is the meshing of the two. xXx uses a plethora of James Bond-esque type gadgets and excellorates them using X-Treme sports. Need to take out some bad guys? Surf a self-caused avalance on a snow board.

Xander Cage, aka xXx, is billed as your typical American anti-hero hero. He's a rough-billed fella who despite his "rum dumb" appearance actually is a very observant and smart cookie. During the cafe test scene, he points out several unrealistic circumstances that would be ridiculous in everyday life. Then late on when he infiltrates Anarchy 99, instead of doing the cookie cutter cop routine, he just walks right up to them and acts like a potential partner in crime. He also has a thing against chain smoking. ;) To which he used later on to "smoke" a guy with a heat-seeking missile.

OK, got the picture? Anyway, this new disc has a short that attempts to explain the lead-up to this year's sequal "State of the Union". As well as a decent little "Making of" of the new film. Quite frankly, I'm really looking forward to the DVD of the sequel and hoping that this franchise picks up some steam.

Oh, for my rating of 4 stars? Actually I give it 3.5 stars. Not bad, but not all that great either. Well, you could say that about several of the latest Bond films as well.
A good action film. Vin Diesel does a good job as the hero even though he comes across as a nice person throughout. If you like action films and Vin Diesel you'll certainly like this one. He was the best of xXx.
This was a surprisingly good action spy movie with all the attendant death defying feats and bizarre gadgets. If you are a fan of the Bond movies, think of this as Bond on steroids.

I feel the water flow as I watch him go
Boy, life is cynical despite my heart of gold
Oh no, buddy don't you cry as they go
Life changes all of us, it's not your fault, no no no

Where did they all run to?
Where the sky is blue forever
Where the sky is blue forever

Life is a dangerous business, you know
Who's gonna care for your bleeding soul?
Take a run, take a run with me
Where the sky is blue forever

Run away
'Til the end of time

And dear buddy don't you cry when she goes
Cause life is cynical despite your heart of gold
Oh no, buddy don't you cry as they go
Life makes us critical, it all began to change and go

Where did they all run to?
Where the sky is blue forever
Where the sky is blue forever

Life is a dangerous business, you know
Who's gonna care for your bleeding soul?
Take a run, take a run with me
Where the sky is blue forever

Run away with me
Run away, where the sky is blue forever

Where did they all run to?
Where the sky is blue forever
Where did they all run to?
Where the sky is blue forever

'Til the end of time
