Here is a book I never thought Id read—a book in which hipster millennials build a hobby farm in my least favorite corner of the United States—but that I found myself drawn into despite myself. This is not to say I dont recognize the truth in other reviewers comments—Plakias opts for summary rather than description, business minutiae rather than character development, and repetition rather than stylistic richness—but I personally think its rather too soon for a masterful biography of its founders or a corporate history. Brooklyn Grange, while well established, is roughly six years old. And as Plakias would probably be the first to admit, six years places the Grange firmly within its initial growth, expansion, and experimental phase. Farming in even the most forgiving of circumstances and the most stable of environments is a tenuous business, and the Grange team chose the most challenging of liminal spaces for their farm, so the risks are greater and the margins more slim. All this to say—in a couple of decades, Brooklyn Granges legacy will be more clear, its biographies and histories more compelling. For now, what the Grange needs most of all is to extend its visibility—and that, my friends, is what The Farm on the Roof can offer. It may not be what we want right now, but I also want to wake up and find that this whole electoral season has been a dream. (Id even take a hoax.) When Brooklyn Granges associated nonprofits have seen their first generational return—that is, when the children touring the rooftop farms today grow up and send children of their own back to the farm, and when participants of the Refugee and Immigrant Program send their children and grandchildren to the farm as volunteers—thats when well have a history. But for now, in 2016, I get the distinct feeling Brooklyn Grange doesnt quite know what its going to look like two decades from now, for all its best-laid plans. Plakias gift is in summary, and in impressing upon her readers the importance of balancing charisma and visionary thinking with sound (and sustainable) business practice.And this book is—blessedly—free of pomposity. Plakias owns up to the Granges hipster origins and cultural aesthetic, but she doesnt preach it. She also closes the book with a run-down of the Granges educational and outreach-related projects, acknowledging one crucial fact shes come to terms with: one urban farm cant change the world. It cant even change New York City. She draws a line, as every for-profit business must, between being a good business and being a save-the-world project. I appreciate that.
