A young woman, Elizabeth DeQuincy, desperate to escape her horrible uncle, decides to disguise herself as a boy in order to find passage to England, her native country. However, on her day of escape, a thief takes all her things and any hope of her leaving war-torn Austria. She is rescued by Herr Sommers, a fence master, who takes pity on her and offers an apprenticeship at his school to earn passage back to England. Over the course of her stay, Elizabeth develops a respect for this mysterious man, a man she knows is not what he says but understands the need for secrecy. Her respect grows into something deeper and she is torn between leaving and staying with Sommers, even as it becomes clear that to stay with him, is to risk her very life.The premise is pretty brilliant and Nita Abrams is known for sweeping, well written and character driven romance novels. The two others Ive read have been phenomenal and toe-curling. However, honestly, I have no idea what The Exiles was about. Other than convoluted, confusing and poorly executed story all around. I hate saying that since Abrams is quite talented and a solid writer.Heres what didnt work:1. Little to zero romance. It is an afterthought completely.2. Too many characters and their perspectives which constantly disrupted the possible romance as well as causing confusion of the subplots.3. Over complex plot to the point I couldnt keep track of all the intrigues because there were literally three or more story lines occurring all at the same time and not enough context.4. Very little characterizations of our H/h and what background was provided came with vague explanations.5. Many scenes and bits of dialogue that made no sense and I had no idea where the author was going. I wasnt sure if some context, or more of it to help me understand the undertones of the dialogue, got edited out on the final draft, or if the author was too close to the plot to be able to stand back and realize how senseless whole chapters came off. It was like constantly entering a room with two strangers talking amongst themselves and youre listening but the conversation is too personal for easy understanding, like, say, the weather or something broader in topic.Im fine with romance novels that lean more towards historical and implied sexual tension than any evidence of it other than a few glances, words and shared moments but it was SO subtle that Im not sure Id consider this a romance book at all. Abrams focus was solely historical and while well-researched, and in that, I respect her efforts but it wasnt engaging or exciting. The author clearly had a handle on the plot, she did not let the readers in on any of it. Not of the discovery or the lead up to the revelations. Characters were mere dressing. Nothing else or more. I was hoping itd get better and when there were moments between Elizabeth and Sommers, it was quite nice but it never went there, it never got that deep or emotional between them. There was a lot of depth but depth I didnt really care about or pull me in. Still love Abrams and her infusion of history into her plots but this is a miss.
