This is not a scholarly review, but what I took from this fascinating life journal.So if you can understand the King-James style language as read in the Holy Bible, you may like the free online version from Project Gutenburg at www.Gutenberg.org. I originally tried this Old English speak, and read and re-read the first 5 chapters. Admittedly, I struggled to comprehend. But I didnt feel badly, as even the learned Augustine struggled with some books. When he tried to read the book of Isiah of the Old Testament ( which was probably written in Hebrew), he said I could not understand the first part that I read....[and] laid it by with the intention of taking it up again when I should be better trained in the Lords style of speech.I should have taken that advice. However, I had the option to search for another version & found only one translation at my local library, and that was interpreted by Rex Warner, published in 1963. It was this version I used to complete this Autobiography, written between 397 and 400 AD.This Confession does not read like a real-time personal diary, but more of a look-back-on-my-life journal written when Augustine was around 40 (per Wiki). When Augustine tells of the wickedness of his youth, full of lies, lust, and love, he is either confessing to God, and arguing about his unworthiness. Or he is talking to himself, recollecting his adventures as a boy and young man. He even repeatedly writes how his devoted mother is desperate to have him baptized into the Catholic church (whereas his father, while alive, was indifferent to his beliefs).I think this is worth reading and worth owning, esp if you, too, struggle with your relationship with and understanding of God. (St. Augustine ask many questions to God: What is the origin of evil? ) I want to Thank Book Tuber Steve Donoghue for his daily encouragement to expand our reading world and GR friends/Book Tubers Olive & Gemma for hosting NONFICTION NOVEMBER 2016. The was the first non-fiction I have read in 2016.
