A defense attorney begins to suspect that there might be more to her client, who is charged with the murders of a vacationing family, than meets the eye.
In France, the Porter family is slaughtered while camping in the woods and only Claire Porter survives seriously wounded. She reports that her husband Henry and her son Peter have been eaten alive by a strong man. The eremite Talan Gwynek that lives in the woods with his mother is arrested by the police accused of being the killer. The defense attorney Kate Moore is assigned to defend Talan and she comes to the police station with her investigator Eric Sarin and the animal expert Gavin Flemyng to interview Talan. The unwilling police inspector Klaus Pistor is sure that Talan is the murderer but has to let Kate and her team work. There is turmoil in the precinct and Gavin is scratched by Talan. Then they visit Talan's mother Mrs. Gwynek and they learn that Talan has a rare disease. Further, the government wants her lands to dispose nuclear waste and her husband has recently died in car accident. Soon Eric discloses that the death of Mr. Gwynek was suspicious and Pistor was in charge of the investigation. When Kate succeeds in sending Talan to a hospital for examination, she discovers the effects of Talan's disease and is the responsible for the next events.
To start of with: this is NOT a found footage film. Some footage is found of the brutal slaying of a family on vacation in France, and it's analyzed and sets of the rest of the proceedings. The film is presented in a documentary style, nothing to do with found footage..

And this doesn't make any difference since it's quite a brilliant film. Or maybe it does since some of those found footage films tend to take pretty illogical steps just to keep the FF gimmick alive. This is just a great, extremely original and thankfully very realistic take on the werewolf saga, slowly built up as a mystery murder thriller.

"Experienced" experts are brought in to examine this apparent brutal animal attack, however who could be prepared for what's to follow. Okay, the ending might have been slightly predictable but it is done with such vigor and ferociousness it's still highly enjoyable and very exciting to watch.

Very well done, very well played by all, absolutely stunning make up- and gore effects, an excellent choice to let it play out in a different country and oh so original. It reminded me of that other very original genre film of late: "Afflicted". Iff you enjoyed that, you will absolutely love this! 8/10
Somehow in the recent lists of werewolf movies or even good horror movies, Wer has been missed out. The first thing to point out is that it's not a video-diary movie (please enough of them already!) and instead it's filmed in a more fly- on-the-wall documentary style. This actually helps when building moments of tension as you feel like you are in the room when something bad could happen. Strangely the film is set in France which is only incidental as most of the time the characters are American or speaking English. The only downsides to the movie (and they are very few) are the reasons for the presence of Kate Moore and Eric Sarin to be involved in the hunt for the baddie, especially when things have already turned really, really nasty. Frankly I would have been a million miles away from the baddie as possible. Also the character Eric Sarin played by Vik Sahay makes an unconvincing deduction that the baddie is a werewolf after spending 2 minutes on the internet... it would have been better to leave that out... or any mention of werewolf. Also a character (no spoilers) decides to shave his entire head... I don't get it!!!.. but there you go, that's all the negatives out of the way (ooh, opening credits were a bit rubbish, don't let them put you off!). Now for some of the good bits... the story is fresh, the script steady and the pace perfect. There were several scenes that had me on the edge of my seat and genuinely made me jump (hooray for any horror film these days that can actually make you jump). The gore was just enough and appropriate, with an eye-watering scene involving a broken glass slide. In some ways Wer reminded me of Chronicle. I think it's the docu-video style down-playing some great action and SFX. So to sum up there's a lot to like in a fresh take on the werewolf movie, with plenty of tension, scares, gore and action.
