One year after bowing out in the biggest upset in NCAA Tournament history, Virginia is a win away from reaching college basketball’s pinnacle.
The Cavaliers are 1.5-point favorites at the Westgate SuperBook over Texas Tech in the national title game, which will begin Monday night at 9:20 p.m. ET. The total opened 119 and dropped half a point quickly.
Virginia has ranked top 5 almost all year in both offensive and defensive efficiency. It only lost to Duke during the regular season. But because of its plodding style and last year’s debacle against UMBC, not a whole lot of people were taking the Cavaliers to make a deep run.
And those people were almost rewarded twice. Virginia needed a miracle against Purdue to force overtime, then a miracle foul as time expired against Auburn to reach the national title game.
Texas Tech has utilized its stellar defense to best Michigan, Gonzaga and Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament. Despite not getting much of anything from star Jarrett Culver against the Spartans, the Red Raiders advanced to set up a date with Virginia.
Tech has the highest-rated defense in the KenPom era (since 2002) and has consistently made adjustments at halftime — coach Chris Beard is now 9-0 ATS against the second half spread in his NCAA Tournament career.
These ratings were built by Sean Koerner, our Director of Predictive Analytics, a former oddsmaker and FantasyPros’ most accurate in-season fantasy football ranker from 2015-2017.

We’ve arrived. College basketball’s end game.
After a grueling regular season and five NCAA Tournament wins, Virginia and Texas Tech will play for the national title on Monday in Minneapolis. These are two of the best defensive teams in the country, so the total is set historically low at 118.
Virginia is a 1.5-point favorite across the market — we’ve seen -1 and -1.5 over the last few days, but nothing beyond that. We’ll be tracking every line move between now and tip off below.
We’ll be tracking the line moves for Virginia vs. Texas Tech using our tools at Sports Insights.
All odds from the Westgate SuperBook unless otherwise noted.
8:45 p.m. ET: Virginia -1 has popped up at a few books, but we’re mostly still sitting at -1.5. The total is still trickling up, reaching 119.5 at Westgate.
6:45 p.m. ET: The over continues to take action, moving to 120 at some books. There are no 118.5’s left, so now is a good time to take the under. Virginia is also taking action, moving to -1.5 across the market, though our Line Predictor Tool thinks it will go back to -1 soon.
4:15 p.m. ET: Late money has hit the over in this game, moving it up to 118.5 and 119 at some books. That’s almost at the opener of 120.
1:15 p.m. ET: Bettors continue to hammer the under, moving it down to 117.5 on Monday afternoon at some books. Westgate moved from Virginia -1.5 to -1 but has the total at 118 still.
8:30 a.m. ET: There hasn’t been much movement Monday morning, despite 57% of bets and 62% of dollars coming in on Texas Tech. Bettors do not want to back a Virginia team that’s been lucky to reach this point.
