I read this book in preparation for a class in tropical agricultural development at ECHO (www.echonet.org) and, while I didnt finish it come class time, found it to be insightful. I am relatively new to any legitimate pursuit of this kind of vocation and thus have little to compare it to, but without a doubt learned much from the reading. It had little in the way of agricultural technique relative to development philosophy, but by the end of the book I was convinced that this may have been one of the central tenets proposed: that, while appropriate technology is crucial, the management of its presentation is just as, if not sometimes more, important. Understanding how and why people learn, form and maintain relationships, grow in their ability to organize themselves (individually and communally), and trust themselves and others - especially outsiders - got far more coverage than the actual innovations themselves.I trust the judgment of those who have recommended this book to those seeking an introduction to community organizing and development in the Majority World, and will surely be reading it again.
