Dominguez Camargo is probably, apart from Sor Juana, the most well-known colonial imitator of Gongora. Reading through this collection, its impossible to not see the Cordoban poets hand in the Colombian poets career. The style is erudite (hyperbaton, Latinate words, obscure classical references), digressive, and filled with complicated metaphors and other attention-calling demonstrations of the authors knowledge and ability. That being said, its a bit difficult to get into the lengthy (360 pages) poem about San Ignacio de Loyola that takes up the majority of the book. However, once you can get a handle on the authors style, the poem is very interesting. It is, of course, an idealization of the mans life, but I found it to be really good. Maybe even more enjoyable than Las soledades (although that might just be because my Spanish is better now than when I last read Gongora). The shorter poems that follow S. Ignacio include the often-anthologized poem about the creek/young horse that is often used as an example of colonial baroque style. His multi-page poem about Christs crucifixion, I thought, was incredible. Quite visceral. I didnt find the introduction particularly helpful, but most of it was used to make the case that Dominguez Camargo should form part of the colonial canon. Now that he is firmly ensconced in it, I think he warrants a newer edition. Worth the effort to read this guy.
