Hope for Haiti, written by Jesse Watson, is an inspirational story told from the point of view of a little boy that lived through the earthquake in Haiti. This story starts off with a great description of what the earthquake felt like to this little boy. Without describing the visual effects this disaster had on the town, the little boy speaks of his feelings and his loss of happiness. After the earthquake, families made their shelters on a nearby soccer field. For the little boy, the soccer field brought up memories of the great players that played there and his desire to play the game. Soon after he found a friend to play with and a homemade ball to kick around and this made him question whether or not it was okay to feel joy when everyone else was struggling to find happiness. Once he got a group of kids together, the game became an outlet of happiness in a saddened neighborhood. A man saw that the game was bringing joy to the kids and offered up a signed soccer ball so that they kids could have a real ball to play with on the field. The signed soccer ball was a symbol of “hope for Haiti”. Although it was signed by a great player, the kids wanting to play with it are the future of Haiti and that is more important than the past. After reading this story I was touched by the symbolism that a soccer ball could have for such a huge natural disaster. This just shows that it is the little things that count in life and in this story the little things are the future of the country.
