A rather lackluster defence of a priori argumentation, and Rationalism in general, in the social sciences (especially economics). The argument is based on the praxeology of Mises, as developed in Human Action and elsewhere. Passing references are made to Kant and Leibniz, but this is mostly lip service. A few embarrassingly superficial and disparaging comments are made to relativism in the social sciences, to set the scene for the Bad Guys.Hoppe is almost an orthodox follower of Mises, and there is nothing here that isnt already in the epistemology of Mises. The author fails to justify the assumptions of Misesian rationalism, even though he makes it clear that these can be defended quite rigorously. The result is a rigorous, foolproof defence of unjustifiable and unjustified assumptions, most notably the so-called Action Axiom (that humans act). Based on a rather simplistic notion of human beings as teleological actors who make plans and carry them out, Hoppe derives the foundations of epistemology therefrom (with a bit of Habermasian cream on top, with the added emphasis of argumentation and communication). From these foundations, the economic science of Austrian economics is supposed to be derived - somehow.I was left unconvinced of the idea that free market rent control theory can be derived a priori from the simple axiom that humans act. It would be awesome if such a theory could be found, but the reader is left wanting. The a priori theory demands incredibly strong foundations, and Mises/Hoppe fail to provide such strong foundations (at least in Hoppes explanation), even though they are capable of drawing some good rational arguments based on these (rather randomly chosen) premises, which need further elaboration and expansion.Overall, Hoppes strength and weakness lies in his almost anal-retentive, point-by-point, rigorously autistic mode of argumentation. It unfortunately crosses the line from rationally rigorous to blindly dogmatic the moment it grants a priori status to flimsy, dubious assumptions - leading to a massive construction of logically foolproof but wholly unconvincing Summa Theologica of Austrian economics.
