SALT LAKE CITY — A South Salt Lake man was arrested over the weekend after police say he robbed a 15-year-old boy of his shoes at gunpoint and then fired a shot at the boy’s parents who confronted him.
About 2:15 p.m. Saturday, police say Keshab Bhattarai, 18, and two others confronted a 15-year-old boy in an alley near 2200 South and 500 East. The three took the boy’s Nike Air Max shoes at gunpoint, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Keith Horrocks.
After being robbed, the boy called his parents who drove to him and picked him up. The three then went looking for the group that committed the robbery and spotted Bhattarai with the shoes a few blocks away, according to a police affidavit.
The parents got out of the car and confronted Bhattarai. He dropped the shoes and ran, but the parents ran after him, according to Horrocks. While they were running, Bhattarai pulled out a gun and fired a round at them, he said. No one was injured.
Salt Lake police used surveillance video from nearby businesses to help identify the gunman, who was wearing a distinctive bag during the robbery, Horrocks said. Detectives found him allegedly wearing the same bag on Sunday and arrested him.
Horrocks said in situations like this, he encourages the public to call police and not directly confront a gunman themselves.
Bhattarai was arrested for investigation of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and felony discharge of a firearm.
