In the heart of the beautiful and historically rich Dordogne Valley of France, a team of archeology students and their professor diligently work to uncover the ruins of a 14th-century castle. For Professor Edward Johnston, the project is the culmination of a lifelong dream. Aided by assistant professor Andre Marek, his son Chris and students Kate, Stern and François, Johnston has made major strides in unearthing not only La Roque Castle but also a monastery and structures from the surrounding village of Castlegard. But things are about to go haywire... Suspicious of the dig's benefactor, International Technology Corporation (ITC) and the man who runs it, Robert Doniger, Professor Johnston heads to ITC headquarters in New Mexico to get some answers, and while he's away, his students discover a chamber that has been sealed for more than 600 years. Marek and Kate descend into the unstable room, and just before a near disastrous cave-in, they make two startling discoveries -- a bifocal lens, which couldn't have been invented before the chamber was sealed, and even more intriguing, a handwritten plea for help dated April 2, 1357...from Professor Johnston! Determined to solve the mystery, the students head for ITC headquarters, where they are stunned to learn of Doniger's new invention -- a machine that can actually transmit three-dimensional objects through space. Although he meant for the device to revolutionize shipping, Doniger inadvertently opened a wormhole that leads directly to the 14th century, and Professor Johnston, who had insisted on experiencing the discovery himself, is now trapped in a vicious French vs. English feudal war! Can Johnston's loyal students survive one of the most violent battles in world history... and make it back to the 21st century alive?
A group of archaeologists and combat experts led by Paul Walker and Frances O'Connor use a "3-D fax machine" (so much for technobabble!) to time-travel back to France in 1357, in hopes of retrieving Walker's father and returning safely to the present. No such luck. Fending for themselves against marauding hordes of medieval French warriors at war with the invading British, these semi-intrepid travelers find their body count rising, and the deadline for their return home is rapidly approaching.
Spoilers ahead. Please, you know what to do - skip.

I really need to defend this film. I won't say that this film is only for those who have read the novel (no filmmaker would do that for a film in this kind of circumstances), but I will say that it would have been a better experience for those who have read it. I understood it more easily, even with the choppy editing (which I'm sure is not the director's fault ... we'll never know the true story behind it, did someone accidentally destroyed some of the negatives shot in the process of producing the film?). In fact in the beginning I was constantly spotting the points of references they inserted in the film. Some people call that 'predictable' (almost everyone apparently, not because they believe what they are writing, but because they want to sound contradictory) and as such, bad. What's wrong with a film being predictable in an interesting way? I knew about the ending with Marek and Claire, and I was looking forward to it, wishing to see how that aspect was done. In fact they gave it a little twist. Some reviewers said that the film doesn't really resemble the novel - are they sure?

And yes, the choppy editing ruined things a little. Those who have not seen the novel wouldn't have seen the point of the prologue, which happened so fast that a few of the main characters (Kramer, Doniger, Gordon) were introduced without being introduced. Again, for those who have read the novel, they wouldn't have noticed the flawed editing.

The book gave our protagonists 33 hours - in the film they had 6. Even then the film was already proceeding at a frenzied rush - they had so many elements to incorporate, and to be honest I was really surprised at how many of the elements of the novel they were able to insert into the film. The fear after killing a person for the first time, De Kere, struggling to get out of the river (a cheat, they used it in a different event), the underground tunnel where Kate and Chris were looking for it together, the idea that whatever the protagonists do they cannot 'change history' because it will somehow correct itself - so much more from the novel. I was initially disappointed that the scene where Chris was forced to do a jousting match was not written in, but now that they have decided on Paul Walker to play Chris, his personality has changed drastically and that wouldn't have worked.
"I've read time line twice and its amazing. i don't understand how the film could have such poor production, the effects and sets were terrible! on its own its a poor film but if you've read the book its Even worse. i don't think the people who made it had ever read the book as the story is not right, so much of the plot was left out or ignored. Also the character relationships are often wrong (for example between Chris and prof Johnston) and there are extra characters (who is Francois dontelle?). there are also two female characters in the book which are for some reason male in the film (Steven Kramer is meant to be Diane Kramer, jimmy Gomez is also a woman in the book! worst of all they changed the ending! i waited 6 months to see this film and it was terrible, if your not going do something properly don't do it!!!! Also id like to suggest the makers read the book!!! they may relies what a crap film they made."

SCREW THE BOOK, who reads books anyway. Just watch the movie, it was mediocre.
There's something light and insubstantial about this movie. It almost floats away as you watch it.
There are 10 people who traveled in time; this is what happened to each of them:

Chris, Kate & Chris' father, prof. Johnston all make it back to 2003 safely.

Frank Gordon: Gets a sword in the chest from De Kere and is left for dead when he is cut loose from the wagon.

François: Gets killed by one of Lord Olliver's aides-de-camps; also via a sword in the chest (They think he's a spy sent by Lord Arnaud).

Gomez: Gets too many arrows in his chest from an English archer as soon as the group gets to 1357. He is left for dead.

Baretta: Blows himself up with his own grenade as he hits his marker, thus he dies in 2003 (He also blows up the time machine).

Decker/De Kere: Dies in the battle of La Roque when the French army attack the castle.

André Marek: Chooses to remain in 1357 and get married to Claire.

Doniger: Steps into the time machine as Chris, Kate & Prof Johnston are coming back to the present. He gets his neck slashed by a knight's sword as soon as he gets to 1357. a5c7b9f00b
