The Watch (2012) <br/><br/>** (out of 4) <br/><br/>Disappointing comedy has Evan (Ben Stiller) former a neighborhood watch group consisting of three other guys (Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade) after his friend is murdered. At first the group thinks they're going after a murderer but they soon realize that they're up against aliens. THE WATCH has quite a few laughs scattered throughout it but when you've got Stiller, Vaughn and Hill you expect much more and in this end this film just doesn't live up to much. It's really too bad that the screenplay wasn't better developed because there's a good movie scattered throughout here but there are just way too many lazy moments and scenes that just add up to nothing. It really seems like someone just came up with the idea of a bunch of misfits going after aliens but they didn't add anything extra. There's really not enough going on here to keep you entertained and once the secret of who's doing the killing is out the film doesn't go anywhere with it. Still, there are some very funny gags here along the way. I think the best moments are when the guys are just kicking back and having some fun like the sequence where they start to party with a dead alien. Stiller, Vaughn and Hill do what they can with the material and they certainly give it more laughs than it deserved but at the same time none of them deliver their best work. Rosemarie DeWitt is wasted in her supporting role as is Will Forte. THE WATCH contains some big laughs but just not enough to make the film worth sitting through. It's far from a bad movie but it's still very disappointing.
For a movie to be acclaimed as a great comedy in trailers...this movie is all but a great comedy. There are only so many penis jokes you can make, and making them stretch out 2 hours was a waste of $9.50 for me. This movie had nothing worth discussing. Terrible story line, terrible acting(which came as a shock to me), terrible scenes, terrible idea, terrible production. Just terrible. You know it is terrible when people in the theater start booing when it ends, and collectively everyone discusses how big of a waste it was.<br/><br/>I'm just honestly very disappointed. Could have been a good movie, if there was a different director.<br/><br/>I give it a 3/10, and that's being generous.
