In times of turbulence and confusion in Egypt, an American team of archaeologists is digging a three-side pyramid in the desert. The engineer Zahir sends his robot to explore the interior while the archaeologists Nora and her father Holden; the video producer Sunni; and the cameraman Fitzie record and analyze the image. However they have to leave the site due to the political instability but out of blue, the expensive robot vanishes inside the pyramid. Amir K convinces Corporal Shadid to give two hours for them to seek out the robot. When they are in the interior, the floor collapses and they fall 30 m down. Soon they learn that the place is a maze full of traps and a creature is hunting them down. Will they succeed to escape?
Retired archaeology professor Holden leads an private expedition in turbulent Egypt's desert with his daughter Nora, cameraman Fitzie and video producer Sunni, which discovers a unique buried, three-sides pyramid. Initially they only send in engineer Zahir's state of the art robot and prepare to leave Egypt, but it gets lost and they get heavily-armed corporal Shahid to cover for them to retrieve it 'two hours max'. However they soon get lost, stumble upon traps, cause a collapse and fear to be utterly stuck, falling down a thirty meters shaft, into an atypical maze with confusing hieroglyphs. Mounting fear turns into justified despair overshadowing scientific curiosity as they find themselves watched, next attacked by voracious, cannibalistic critters between rats and cats, and next a figure which resembles the god of last judgment Anubis.
A team of intrepid archaeologists and documentary film makers become lost in the bowels of a mysterious 3-sided pyramid, where they find themselves faced with deadly pitfalls, menaced by flesh-eating sphinx cats and hunted by the jackal-headed Egyptian god Anubis, who tears out his victims' hearts.

Many a found-footage horror film should carry a warning: Caution! May cause nausea and drowsiness. The Pyramid, however, is one of those rare instances where the hand-held camera style is not too intrusive and the horror aspect is gripping enough to prevent the viewer from nodding off.

Admittedly, the script isn't all that original, borrowing heavily from hits such as The Descent (a claustrophobic subterranean location is home to deadly creatures), The Blair Witch Project (characters become lost and are attacked by a legendary being) and even Raiders of the Lost Ark (an Egyptian temple is laden with labyrinthine passageways and booby traps), but first-time director Grégory Levasseur injects enough suspense, effective scares, intriguing mythology and gory thrills into proceedings to make this a fun ride despite the over familiarity of the material and the rather ropey looking CGI Anubis.

6/10. Many IMDb reviewers have been rather harsh about this film. I, on the other hand, may have been a touch too generous with my appraisal (I'm a sucker for 'lost temple' adventures). The truth is there are a lot worse films you could be wasting your time with.
Caught this On-Demand and was actually quite surprised. It is (yet) another "found footage" film, but this one actually worked for me because it never took itself too seriously.

Seems a team of archaeologists have come upon the "find of the century" in the form of a pyramid. This one is a little different than the others because they discover (too late) it was built below ground for a reason. The team descends on Cairo amidst tons of turmoil. They have only been there for a short time when they are ordered out because it may have become too dangerous for all of them.

The dig team has been accompanied by a news crew to film their every move. Hell-bent on going into the entrance of the new find (even though they have been ordered to leave), they send in a robot one of them has scammed from NASA. It has all the latest bells and whistles, including a pivoting camera. It goes in but never comes out; thus, the team and news crew decide to go in after it. Big mistake.

The Pyramid worked for me on many levels: it was well directed, well acted, well shot, and gave me that god-awful claustrophobic-I- can't breathe feeling. There is some graphic violence in the movie, but nothing anybody hasn't already seen. I noticed in the credits that Alexandre Aja was an executive producer of the film. He is more widely known as a director (remake of "The Hills Have Eyes" and "Haute Tension"). Some of his "style" can be found in this movie.

The movie is rated "R" for violence and language. It's not the greatest movie you'll ever see, but I thought it was fun and had a couple of genuine jump moments. Recommended.
By the end of The Pyramid, found footage becomes just another possession to be buried alongside long-dead Pharaohs for use in the next life. Here’s hoping the next life has no return policy.
