STAR RATING: ***** Saturday Night **** Friday Night *** Friday Morning ** Sunday Night * Monday Morning

SERIES ONE

Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) was a decorated Special Forces operative, until his whole family was brutally wiped out. Assumed dead himself, he now lives under a new identity, but also operates as The Punisher, a merciless exterminator of evil who's also on a mission to hunt down and exact revenge against those responsible for his family's death. He finds himself pursued by a mysterious individual named David Lieberman (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), who works under the name of Micron. Initially abrasive, Frank forms a partnership with Lieberman, whose living under similar circumstances, but has a living family. Meanwhile, Field Agent Dinah Madani (Amber Rose Revah) is determined to get to the bottom of her partner's death. It all hinges on a heroin trafficking network, run by the evil Rawlins (Paul Schulze), on which all their paths will brutally converge...

Despite never reading any of the comics (hell, I don't read any comics today, though), and despite others (who probably have) being far less appraising of all his on screen appearances, I have personally loved all the incarnations of The Punisher character, from Dolph Lundgren's moody, broody portrayal of him in 1989, all the way through to this modern Netflix version, which transfers the premise to a small screen, television series format. The most grown up, grounded in reality of all the comic book icons (no spandex suit or special powers to speak of) and one not squeamish of depicting brutal, blood splattered violence, for someone not overly mired in the comic book world, it's not hard to see why this might be.

Of all the actors to portray the character so far, a bad choice really has yet to be made, and it certainly hasn't started with Bernthal. With his gravelly, grunting voice and beefed up, toned demeanour, he suits the character down to a tee, and is engaging for all of the thirteen episodes of the first season. What makes this version of TP stand out is the roots of the story being shifted from the mob being the enemies to rogue operatives within the Special Forces/CIA, and Frank Castle being changed from being an ex-cop to an ex-soldier. This gives the show a chance to gain broader depth, and it gets to bring up timely and relevant subjects, with subplots involving soldiers struggling with Post Traumatic stress disorder and the lack of assistance in re-adjusting to civilian life.

There was really too much of a gap between adaptations to really appreciate the potential of how the concept of TP would work in a television production, but thankfully Netflix have shown the impressive results, leaving fans of no holds barred, blood splattered, brutal, bone crunching action heroes with something to salivate like bloodhounds over. ****
Wasn't a fan at first. Very slow start. Too much talk, hardly any action.

The constant back story was a little tedious. I hope that's the last of it.

However, as it went on, it got better and better. Hard to watch it places.

Jon Bernthal is a joy. Such a tough exterior, but those soft, deep brown eyes don't lie.

It's just a pity he has to go through so much. Perhaps it should be renamed The Punished.

I will say though, there was not a trace of Marvel in that production.
