After exacting revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife and children, Frank Castle uncovers a conspiracy that runs far deeper than New York's criminal underworld. Now known throughout the city as The Punisher, he must discover the truth about injustices that affect more than his family alone.
After the murder of his family, Marine veteran Frank Castle became a vigilante known as "The Punisher" with only one goal in mind, to avenge them.
Show: Marvel's The Punisher Release Date: November 14 on Netflix Starring: Jon Bernthal, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ben Barnes, Amber Rose Revah, and Deborah Ann Woll Length: 13 episodes It's nice to know that after six seasons, the Marvel-Netflix universe of superheroes can still offer us something fresh. The Punisher is a great grisly man-hug of a superhero adaptation. Our anti-hero – normal person name Frank Castle- Takes revenge against the shadowy drugs cabal responsible for the death of his family. But Marvel's The Punisher is the first one that feels at least twice the length it should be. The story's main thrust is a sound one — Castle and Micro attempt to track down the shadowy figures that turned a group of elite soldiers into an illegal torture-and-kill squad — but it's not the only show in town. Seemingly hoping to avoid the mid-season slump typical of most Marvel shows, Lightfoot and company pack "The Punisher" to the rafters. Curtis (Jason R. Moore), an old war buddy of Frank's, runs a support group for vets, notably Lewis (Daniel Webber of "11.22.63"), a young man with severe PTSD. The operation is funded by another war buddy, Billy (Ben Barnes), who spends his days building a private security and military operation and his evenings grieving his long-lost friends. He crosses paths with Homeland Security Agent Dinah Madani (Amber Rose Revah), hot on Castle's trail, and her path intersects with Karen Page, and there's also a lot of business with Frank visiting Micro's wife (Jaime Ray Newman) and kids. It's a lot. Better too rich than too thin, to be sure, but "The Punisher" casts its net so wide that almost none of these stories get a fair shake. When they do, it's usually the acting that closes the gap — Woll and Bernthal are so good together that it almost doesn't matter that their scenes get snapped out quickly — but it's hard to escape the feeling that, in giving us all that story, "The Punisher" doesn't have much time for substance. It's simultaneously too much and not enough. But as it usually is the case with these Netflix-Marvel shows, it can be awfully slow-moving. Once again, the 13-episode run of the season drags out a story that could've been done in a tighter eight instalments. There's a lot of unnecessary padding. The violence, while not as pervasive as expected, can still be confronting, especially as some battle scenes play out like a first-person shooter game with its use of body-cam footage.
I had high expectations as I really enjoyed Frank Castle aka The Punisher when he appeared in Daredevil Season 2. But it took me a while to get into this series. It started off slow, and much more 'chatty' than action packed. I grew rather sick of the 'pretty wife smiling' flashbacks. I even had to re-watch parts of episodes a few times as I lost track, and interest, a little bit.

Then suddenly the plot hooked me, the characters grew on me and every episode felt shorter than the last one, because it just got better and better. By the end we finally get the Punisher that we were introduced to in Daredevil. The tempo is high and blood splatters across the screen? Too graphic? Perhaps. But then The Punisher has always had a different beat that other Marvel comics.

I can however understand the criticism that this series does not belong in the wider MCU, as it does not mention the existence of superheroes and does not relate to it in any way. If feels more like a stand alone show. Which is a shame. However it is still a good series, and should not be disregarded. Perhaps a season 2 will tie The Punisher more closely together to the other characters in the Netflix/Marvel word.

I give it 7/10 because it is a great ride - but the slow start and the lack of fellow superhero mentions means it aims and fires, but it does not quite hit the mark.
