Officers Danson and Highsmith are the two best cops that New York City has to offer. However when they take on an assignment that proves for them to be too much to handle, they are killed in the line of duty. With New York now devoid of its heroes, a void needs to be filled. The entire department is scrambling to fill the fallen heroes' shoes. But now Alan Gamble, a seemingly bland and dull forensics accountant, and his partner Terry Hoitz, who earned the nickname "The Yankee Clipper" and is universally known for having shot Derek Jeter during game 7 of the World Series, have broken the case open thanks to Gamble's investigation of faulty scaffolding equipment. Now desperate to see some action, Gamble and Hoitz will leave their desks to take on the case of a lifetime that will see their partnership come to the ultimate test, as well as the relationships they have with their significant others. Will Gamble and Hoitz live to tell about it, or will they just be the other guys?
Following the death of two experienced, all star cops, one pair of insignificant, feeble cops try to take their place. They are Allen Gamble, a nonsensical police accountant, and Terry Hoitz, a streetwise detective who shot Derek Jeter. While trying to get along with each other, they stumble upon a scaffolding permit violation that turns into a huge case involving a major corporation and a sucker they are trying to target.
I don't know. Maybe I just don't get it. I don't get spoofs I guess. Airplane was funny too, but, seriously, can you rate a movie higher than a 5/10 just for being more than funny? This one I can't. Maybe it's just Will Ferrell. Honestly, Mark Wahlberg in a comedy? Maybe I don't get that either. Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock looked like they were just having fun, who wouldn't doing that kind of a bit? There's some kinds of comedy that deserve more than a 5/10 rating, but I guess they just aren't spoofs in my book.

Cop shows are what I live for. I've been addicted to L&O SVU for the past 10 years I think, and I used to like the regular L&O stuff sometimes. CSI shows are OK too. Heck, I've watched cop spoofs before, and I've seen spy spoofs, going back all the way to Get Smart (does that date me?), some of it's good, some is OK. I didn't find much redeeming about this movie, just funny is all.
"The Other Guys" refers to, of course, the detectives who rarely get a piece of the archetypal cops-and-robbers shenanigans that are frequently seen in action movies or on "Law & Order". They remain mainly at their desks doing paperwork, something almost never seen in movies. Ferrell is Allen Gamble, who is somewhat content with managing case work on his computer, and Wahlberg is the far more forceful and ambitious Terry Hoitz.

Their characters are in sharp contrast to the cops that Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson portray in this film (and definitely in other films). Although Jackson and Johnson were also funny here, I hate that the previews gave away their cameos in this movie. It would have been more exciting if the audience didn't expect them when they stepped into the theaters. Then again, that is the fault of whomever marketed this film, not the filmmakers themselves.

When Allen and Terry start working on a case they have a lead in, one they get to before other senior detectives do, a really interesting detective story progresses that would not feel out of place in dramas like "The French Connection" (1971) or similar action/detective movies to that nature.
A surprising, laugh-out-loud take on the old buddy-cop genre. It's sneaky and smartly funny, offering an almost perfect balance of action and comedy. That's the good news. Then there's the matter of the movie's disheartening final 25 minutes.
Oh La La by Goldfrapp. The complete list of songs in the Other Guys soundtrack can be foundhere with scene descriptions. On DVD/BD both the Theatrical Version and an Unrated Version have been released. The latter runs approx. ten and a half minutes longer than the well-known version and offers some more scenes that are R-Rated worthy. Due to the fact that both versions are featured on the DVD/BD one can check out both versions and there's no need for a double dip. a5c7b9f00b
