The story of the Newton gang, the most successful bank robbers in history, owing to their good planning and minimal violence.
Four Newton brothers are a poor farmer family in the 1920s. The oldest of them, Willis, one day realizes that there's no future in the fields and offers his brothers to become a bank robbers. Soon the family agrees. They become very famous robbers, and five years later execute the greatest train robbery in American history.
The Newton Boys (1998): Dir: Richard Linklater / Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Skeet Ulrich, Dwight Yoakam: This is about as boring as a western can get. The best aspect of this film are interviews with the real Newton Boys in the conclusion. They were bank robbers in the 1920's but the story is a long dreary bore with hopeless settings and characters whom we really never care about. Matthew McConaughey leads the pack that includes Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Skeet Ulrich, and Dwight Yoakam. They might have well stayed home for all the humanity they give these roles. They are names on faces that never elevate off the screen. It never involves viewers and much of it is predictable and repetitious with a dull action climax. Director Richard Linklater often examines consequences of human behaviour. He previously made superior films such as Dazed and Confused and Slacker and despite The Newton Boys being a different outing for him to direct, the final product is about as exciting as a kick to the crotch. What he does do is bring certain purpose to the material as it showcases the lifestyle of these boys and the historical elements. The ensemble cast is an unfortunate waste when the actual Newton Boys interviews might have been more entertaining for ninety minutes. This film plays like a history report as oppose to a feature film. Score: 4 / 10
The Newton Boys tells the story of Willis, Joe, Jess and Dock Newton, four brothers who become some of the most notorious bank and train robbers the history of America has ever seen. And they're based on real life events and people, making it all the more exciting.

What really keeps this movie afloat are the actors. McConaughey, Ulrich, Hawke and D'Onofrio are all versatile and personable actors, breathing life into their characters by their sheer presence. The story is told largely from McConaughey's point of view and it's actually one of his better performances and fits his usual mannerisms perfectly, unlike in some other movies where they are somewhat distracting.

The plot is also entertaining, though because it's based on real life it ends up being somewhat repetitive until the final third when the big twists start rolling. Not that the first two acts aren't interesting, but they don't raise the stages the same way a fictional story would. It's not a huge problem, but it's noticeable, especially if you've seen a lot of gangster films.

In the end The Newton Boys is well worth a watch if you're into the idea that sometimes real life is more exciting than any movie and/or if you're looking for a good gangster/robber movie to check out.
If Mr. Linklater is not entirely at ease with action sequences (or with the obligatory having-fun montage once the brothers become successful), he still makes this (after ''Before Sunrise'' and ''Suburbia'') another admirable directorial stretch.
