In the midst of an elaborate conspiracy, an expert negotiator is driven to the edge when he's framed for the murder of his partner, as well as embezzling money from his department's pension fund. His only chance to prove his innocence is to take hostages himself, acquire the services of another expert negotiator, and find out who's running the conspiracy before it's too late.
Samuel L. Jackson is Danny Roman, a hot shot police negotiator and the man of the hour in the police department. One day he wakes up to find that he has been set up, and now the police are after him. In his panic, he takes control of a building. Knowing all the rules of negotiation, Danny asks for the only negotiator he can trust - Chris Sabian (Kevin Spacey). When the police get itchy trigger fingers and want to go into the building shooting, Sabian finds that the only way he can save Danny Roman's life is to go in there and become his partner. Now the police have to deal with both of them.
Tense, fast paced, edge of your seat action thriller. Spacey suits his cool character, the new negotiator with Jackson as tough and believable as all his performances. Morse is also very good as the hard line swat officer. This film had me engrossed from the outset, it's more intelligent than other films in the same genre. You soon find you're questioning everyone else's actions and soon you can't trust anyone either. Although it seems a quick conclusion, it doesn't take away from the excitement and entertainment value.
An engaging way to spend 140 minutes. The Negotiator gives us stock characters, unfortunately, and you'll be swept by waves of deja vu as you recall other films with similar premises; but it still is somewhat intelligent and engaging...up till the end.

I can't slam the ending without giving away secrets, so stop reading here if you haven't seen it.

It transpires that the ringleader of the gang of crooked cops is one of the hostages, Frost. He's also the first hostage released. And another hostage, Niebaum, knows Frost's secret, but doesn't protest or say anything at all to Danny when Frost is released. This is, frankly, absurd...he doesn't otherwise appear to be dumb as a brick, he should have easily guessed that he would be in great danger as a result of this.

The final scene between Sabian and Frost is moronic. Neither man had any reason to trust the other. And...Sabian shooting Roman? Your typical Hollywood exaggeration. People die from gunshot wounds like that.

Too bad...this movie was (slightly) above average until the last 15 minutes or so.
Instead of the cat-and-mouse cogitations and psych-outs one might rightly expect from this high concept, we're fobbed off with a lot of sub-Die Hard theatrics and stinko plotting.
