Eddie, an indomitable Hong Kong cop, is transformed into an immortal warrior with superhuman powers after a fatal accident involving a mysterious medallion. Eddie enlists the help of British Interpol agent Nicole to determine the secret of the medallion and face down the evil Snakehead who wants to use its magical powers for his own nefarious plans.
A Hong Kong detective suffers a fatal accident involving a mysterious medallion and is transformed into an immortal warrior with superhuman powers.
I am an avid fan of Jackie Chan and respect him as a person and as an action hero/martial arts actor. However, I still have to admit that Medallion left me confused and unfulfilled.

Summary: Eddy Yang is a Hong Kong police officer that is teamed up with 2 Interpol officers, Nicole James and Arthur Watson, in Dublin, to rescue a kidnapped boy. During the rescue, Eddie dies and the boy uses the supernatural powers of the medallion he holds to reincarnate Eddie. After this, Eddie has supernatural healing ability, strength and speed. Meanwhile, a villain named Snakehead (the one who had the boy kidnapped) is trying to get the immortal power of the medallion. All this leads to a confrontation between Eddie and Snakehead.

Oh, where to begin. The pacing of this movie was way off. Frequently scenes seemed out of place or as if you had missed something. The dialogue was rather poor and frequently the interaction between characters was really, really forced. Occasionally throughout the movie, my friend would turn to me (or I to him) and ask, "Um, did I miss something?"

The plot is nothing new and has been done before. The Medallion is a fusion between The Golden Child and Bulletproof Monk.

However, I am still hesitant to give the more a horrible rating because, although the movie was frequently incoherent, cheesy and had poor dialogue, there were some honest-to-goodness really good scenes. For example, there is a scene when Eddie first discovers his invulnerability and has Watson stab him with a knife to prove it. After the first thrust did not injure Eddie, Watson repeatedly stabbed Eddie much to his chagrin. The scene was well played out and was hilarious! There were other good scenes too. The pace of the movie went rather like, "This is dumb." "Oh, this is good!" "This is stupid!" "Wow! This is a cool scene!" and so on.

So, here is my final result. The movie was rather disappointing overall, but did have some genuine good scenes. Also, Jackie Chan is always a pleasure to see doing his "Jackie Chan" role with his style of fighting and acrobatic (even if most of it was 'enhanced' in this movie). I give the movie 4 out of 10.
The outtakes at the end of this film are the most enjoyable part. You can actually see something likeable about the characters for the first time. Sure, I agree with most people that this was not an excellent film, though I don't believe it was the actors who were to blame. (with the exception of Julian Sands perhaps, who's every second of screentime was dreadful) More likely naff direction, poorly developed comedy/romance scenes and flimsy plot were the culprits. The Kung Fu scenes were decent enough, and though the voice dubbing seemed to randomly switch between English and Chinese (something I have seen before in this type of production) the film overall would not look disgraced among contemporaries of Hong Kong cinema. Go Claire Forlani, nice to see you being English again!
Though haphazardly put together, The Medallion stays fairly entertaining until it kills Chan off and resurrects him as an immortal being.
The working title of the film was "Highbinders". In the original plot of the film, those who were given power by the medallion became a Highbinder. Snakehead's original goal in the film was to create an army of Highbinders to join in his crime organization.

According to the commentary by the editors, "The Medallion" was not American-made, although Columbia-TriStar bought the distribution and editing rights worldwide except in Japan, France, and Hong Kong (but these three countries retain the American cut of the film, the only cut ever made). The original cut was meant to be around 108 minutes, and the plot of the film explained Snakehead's crime organization of human smuggling, and the deaths that occurred from it, as well as his desire to create an army of Highbinders to aide his crime organization. All of this, however, was cut to center on the medallion. a5c7b9f00b
