Bret Maverick is a superb professional poker gambler, as handy with the handgun as he handles the cards, but also a master at avoiding violence by deception. Like all great poker layers, he's on his way to a winner take all championship on Commodore Duvall's riverboat, but first must complete the steep entry sum, collecting debts and gambling. He has most confusing encounters with other gamblers, mainly fake 'Southern belle' Annabelle Bransford and Marshal Zane Cooper, tricksters in his league, and various other stooges and accomplices, such as the bandit Angel and his gang, the Indian Joseph who preys on tourists and one of them, a Russian Archduke. Things are rarely what they seem, as layers of shameless deception are unfolded.
Gambler Bret Maverick is on his way to a poker tournament wherein half million dollars is at stake. At he needs is $25,000 and he has so far 22. So he goes around trying to collect from people who owe him but it appears they all try to get out of paying him. And he plays poker hoping to come up with the money. Along the way he crosses paths with a man named Angel whom he out plays which makes him dislike Maverick and a woman named Annabelle who is a con woman. So as he continues to go to the tournament and tries to get the rest of the money he needs. Angel's asked by someone to keep Maverick from getting to the tournament and he tries. But Maverick is just too lucky.
Way back last century there was a TV series called "Maverick." A much younger James Garner was the star. Now Garner came back as a different character in a fine supporting role in this movie "Maverick." Mel Gibson is Bret Maverick, expert gambler and expert gunfighter, but always quick with a joke and a laugh. The basic story line is his journey to a big poker tournament on a river boat, but he needs to scrape together the $25,000 entry fee. Along the way he encounters old enemies, and makes a few new ones.

One of the people he meets is Jodie Foster as Annabelle Bransford, also a fine poker player, but even better pickpocket. Then there is James Garner as Marshal Zane Cooper.

It was fun seeing Graham Greene as an Indian Joseph, and he and Gibson were in some good scenes shot in Yosemite National Park. Half-dome is prominent in some of the shots. (As the scene began my wife said "That's Yosemite.") Greene was the native medicine man in the TV series "Northern Exposure."

Alfred Molina is superb as Angel, who is after Bret Maverick. Always trying in vain to get rid of him, or at least prevent him from getting to the poker tournament in time.

For me it was a totally fun movie. Gibson, Garner, Foster, and Molina played off each other so well.

MAJOR SPOILERS: As it turns out, Maverick is Marshal Cooper's son. As the poker tournament ends it appears that Cooper turns bad and steals the $500,000 pot. But he and Maverick meet up at a spa, along with Annabelle. She disappears with part of the money, as expected, but Maverick held back his share in a different place so she wouldn't take it all.
I have seen this movie 10 times ore more and I still love it! The main reason must be Mel Gibsons charming acting! I have always loved Mel Gibson, but in this movie he's better than ever! Jodie Foster is also great as Annie, not to mention James Garner! And the way you get more an more confused about what's happening and finally finds out that... No, I better not write that! Some of you might not have seen this movie! But if you have not, then there's only one thing to say; See it!
The plot is one the original writers would have been proud of and with Garner, himself, appearing it gives the film a seal of approval. A rare performance from Foster who is surprisingly funny and Molina giving a good supporting performance, it's an enjoyable family film.
The robber is played by Danny Glover, who was Mel Gibson's partner in the Lethal Weapon series of films (also directed by Richard Donner). When he pulls down the mask they look at each other for a second and a musical sound bit from Lethal Weapon plays as they look at each other and shake their heads. Also when leaving the bank, Danny Glover is heard saying "I'm too old for this shit." which he says (or a variation) of in all 4 Lethal Weapon movies. a5c7b9f00b
