In efforts to construct perfect android killing machines in a war against China, UK scientists exceed their goal and create a sentient robot.
Two artificial intelligence engineers come together as they work to create the first ever self-aware artificial intelligence. A veteran AI engineer secretly hopes to develop technology to help his diseased daughter, even if it means funding comes from the powerful Ministry of Defence (MoD). His new partner, a young woman gifted in the field of AI, is brought on after her breakthroughs are recognized by the MoD. Things go wrong when the MoD takes over and advances the researchers' work to the next level, teaching the AI to kill and follow MoD instructions with its new and nearly indestructible body.
This British film is written and directed by Caradog W. James, who's previous work includes a handful of short films and the comedy feature Little White Lies. I was lucky enough to shake his hand and congratulate him on his film shortly after the screening.

The movie follows a scientist called Vincent (Toby Stephens). He works for the Ministry of Defence at a time where they are on the brink of a cold war weapons race with China. His job is to develop an advanced weapon using artificial intelligence. He's developed a brain chip that can be implanted into the brain of injured soldiers, but when a glitch manifests itself with deadly consequences Vincent enlists the help of A.I. expert Ava (Caity Lotz).

Under the watchful eyes of their boss Thomson (Denis Lawson) and his assistant Suri (Pooneh Hajimohammadi), Vincent and Ava set about creating the perfect android. During the process, the co-wokers become close and Vincent reveals that he's also using the MOD's funding to research ways to help cure his daughter's illness.

The end product is "The Machine" with full free thinking and learning capabilities. But it's not long before Thomson steps in and makes some controversial decisions that leads to everything Vincent has worked hard for to crumble around him.

The film is very atmospheric from start to finish. The cold blue lighting and soft focus lense work helps create a very solemn mood that all the best Sci-Fi flicks have and the cinematography is absolutely spectacular. My eyes were constantly glued to the screen!

It wasn't just the visuals that were great, the script was too. It was of the highest standard and didn't just fill our heads with technical jargon and unbelievable plot lines. The threat of an arms race, nations rising to power through technological advances is a very real thing in the world we live in today. The characters are so well written, that each of them can be related to. It also gives you a very real feeling that this isn't actually that far into the future. The firearms used are on par with today's advanced guns, the lead actors drive newer cars that we see on the roads today and a lot of the gadgets used could be the next generation tablet/iPad type technology.

The cast was a varied collective, but performed brilliantly together. Lawson played the main antagonist, displaying a mild but menacing demeanor. Stephens in the main role gave a great deal of depth to his performance. He was the angry scientist, the doting father and the warm caring friend. Hajimohammadi's role is worth a mention too, although not a great deal of screen time compared to the rest of the cast, she's delivers a creepy and an important performance. But it was Caity Lotz that stole the show! She's not just the sassy A.I. expert we see at the start of the film. She also plays the role of "The Machine" for reasons I won't give spoiler too. She's elegant, child like, formidable and deadly in the role and performed all her own stunts!

The direction was simply fantastic, for all of the above reason too. And even though the movie was made for under £1million the SFX/CGI is second to none. I honestly could not fault this film!

THOUGHT PROVOKING, HEART WARMING, DARK & DAUNTING. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SCIENCE FICTION FILMS YOU'LL EVER SEE!
The machine is far from a perfect movie and its greatest problem is also what made me very appreciative of the team that made it. Low budget scifi movies usually fall into a SciFi channel fakeness and shallow plots, while pretending they are more than they really are.

The Macinhe avoids this, by having a great cast. Both Stephens and Lotz were known to me from their roles in TV series. And it reminded me just how very shallow the characters they play there are. Lotz especially in my opinion deserves a chance for a much harder roles than she plaid so far. Her changes from the scientist to an infant machine to an adult machine were just amazing. And the make-up and special effects ... just great.

I however did not appreciate the film as much while I was watching it. The tone is clearly derivative of Bladerunner with its always blue-gray lighting and the general dystopian future theme. I personally do not like the Bladerunner at all, I do not dispute its cult status though. It is just a matter of personal preference. Also the movie never pulled me in, but kept me at a distance.

The greatest setback of this movie, however is that it is too short. It has great ideas embedded, that never get the time they deserve. Clearly the authors made a great effort when creating it, even the shell on the camera uses a logical syntax (but it's not Bash as it says ;) ). Still those ideas go undeveloped throughout the movie. For example, the relationship between Vincent and his daughter feels empty and I did not identify with it. Also, the individual shots are very short and the movie jumps from scene to scene very rapidly like a surveillance camera loop. Its story is told in a way that I was always aware I was watching it through a screen, just like on a surveillance video. I wonder in retrospect if that was not intentional.

---Spoilers from here on--- The good greatly outweighs the bad, though. There are some absolutely gorgeous moments, like when the machine admits her love for Vincent and he misses it. And this was a great way to break the usual "Frankenstein's Bride" routine. The scene where Lotz dances in front of the lab was absolutely gorgeous. Then the details how would a machine learn and act while being in a physical body for the first time were spot on in my opinion. Moments like these really make this move. Unfortunately I found it was good only when it was over due to the fact it stayed with me for way too long, opened a few questions about AI and gave them a new perspective I previously pondered myself. So this is why I had to write a review.

Additionally, it's a low budget movie. Way to go! Never noticed it. This shows that with effort a low budget can go a long way.
Even with a cut-and-dried approach to characterization and the issue of man-made consciousness, The Machine percolates with an elegantly palpable sense of wonder and danger.
