This Show is SUCH a great show!! True the special effects may not be the best but the cast is great, the crew is great, the landscapes are great and they do this all on a really tight budget. They are wonderfully nice people and they are ALL great at what they do. The acting is great and the plots my not be the best. The show started out as something from the book but as the show went on it became a thing of it's own. The characters are wonderful and have great interactions with the other characters, the plot is full of twists and turns. True they have two characters have gone away but the crew and everyone is trying desperately to get them back, and only one of them died but then are truly beloved by all. If you have read the book it may not be the best show to you if you compare it to the book but it is something different. As for the faries and the rest of it it is a fantasy/action/adventure show as anyone that watches The Lost World knows by now: "Anything can happen in The Lost World." Rissy;)
When I was a little boy (I am now in my early forties) I used to love to watch Tarzan, and other such adventure movies shown on Saturday and Sunday afternoons on the New York television stations. Viewed today, the "special effects" of the 1930's and '40's era films seem quaint, and even primitive. I wonder what might have been accomplished if those writers and directors had at their disposal the amazing technologies available to today's production studios. Whatever it may have been, it would not have been the banal nonsense to which the unfortunate viewer of "The Lost World" is subjected.

In my area (Northern New Jersey) this TV show appears on Channel 11 in the afternoons, and I have come across it quite by accident. It's clear that the writers, having usurped the basic story from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (the creator of "Sherlock Holmes"), have not the imagination or talent to come up with any storylines whatsoever; a secret and hidden plateau in South America (transplanted apparently to Mongolia) is home to various primitive tribes, and species of exotic animals, including dinosaurs. Explorers (circa 1935) have found their way there and are now trapped, and confronting the myriad dangers of such an environment.

The first episode I really watched showed them living in a huge tree house out of the "Swiss Family Robinson" and introduced a jungle girl replete with a bikini outfit and a hair style and complexion out of any woman's magazine ad pages. She is supposed to have been raised as an orphan in the jungle after her explorer father vanished, and has met up with the new group. Her name is Veronica, and she speaks as though she has recently wandered off of the campus of UCLA. (A aged and weary captive is found, a caucasion, who seems to recognize her; "Do I know you?" is her haughty retort, (emphasis on "know" as though spoken by a pretty blond girl in a bikini to put some Westwood barside interloper in his place).

The show is inane, idiotic and insulting. Weapons are fired apparently without any regard for what should be restricted amounts of ammunition. Humans of varying states of evolution cohabitate with dinosaurs in an area which cannot be larger than Connecticut. Recent story lines I have had the misfortune to witness (while making lunch with the TV on) now deal with seances, the mystic channeling of ancient spirits and someone hallucinating about World War I (in his hallucination he picks up the pistol of a dead German soldier and uses it to shoot at the members of his party who have come looking for him, who must then dodge the bullets- that's some hallucination!).

It could have been a great show. It is instead a pathetic vehicle to recycle dinosaur models leftover from other movies and show a 21st Century "valley girl" in her animal skin bikini pursuing outlandish plots that have nothing to do with the basic setting or premise of the show, let alone the original books. To the writers, producers and directors of this mess I say "get lost".

Yes, it is based off the book of the same name. It is essentially the same story, with little changes. The character of Veronica was not featured in the book, and is a character original to the television series. a5c7b9f00b
