Russian mobster Terek Murad has declared open season on the Russian militia and the United States FBI over the shooting of his brother in a Moscow nightclub. He hires "The Jackal" -- an elusive, nasty assassin -- to kill FBI Director Donald Brown. Present at the shooting of Murad's brother were FBI Deputy Director Carter Preston and Major Valentina Koslova of the Russian militia. Nearly no one has ever seen The Jackal, save for Declan Mulqueen, an imprisoned IRA sniper. Upon learning that the Director Brown is a target, Preston and Koslova enlist the services of the reluctant Mulqueen to track down the Jackal before he can assassinate Brown.
The United States is trying to help the New Russia in its war against organized crime. Presently, they are after Terek Murad, a deadly crime boss. They get evidence against one of Murad's people who is also his brother for murder so they try to arrest him. But the man tries to kill Russian cop, Major Koslova so she kills him. Murad seeks revenge against the ones who killed his brother, FBI agent Carter Preston and Russian Major Valentina Koslova, and wanting to send a message to America about interfering in matters he believes are none of its concern. Thus, he hires "The Jackal," an international assassin, to kill a prominent American. The Jackal tells Murad to go into hiding till the job is done. When Preston and the Russian police learn that Murad has gone into hiding; they wonder why? So they grab Murad's man and under intense interrogation he mentions the Jackal. Preston knows about the assassin. Koslova confirms it because the Russians have used him. She also tells Preston that Murad's man had info on the Director of the FBI which makes Preston think, the Director is the target. So he informs the Director who chooses not alter his schedule or add security. He tells Preston to find him quietly. So Preston needs to find someone who's seen the Jackal and unfortunately there are not that many and most of the ones they know of are dead. There's a woman who knows him but she's vanished so he tries to enlist the help of a man who might know where she is, Declan Mulqueen, an imprisoned IRA sniper. Mulqueen refuses to help till he learns about the Jackal and tells them he knows who he is, so they let him help them. But finding the Jackal is not going to be easy.
So lets say you are a producer, you have some money, and you somehow got Richard gear and Bruce Willis, so now all you need is a script...but , why bother? see, this movie is really terrible, the acting is pretty good, but the casting is awful gear and Willis did their best to play these characters they simply cant play. now, this movie has no plot, or rather, there's something that tries to pass off as a plot: there's a mean hit-man (Willis) who is cool dangerous and sophisticated (actually he's none of those things, but from some dialog between the other characters, you are supposed to get this impression), so this hit-man is on a mission to kill someone, now there's an ex-IRA prisoner who is kind and nice and very likable (gear) who the FBI release from prison so he will help them. so now the FBI is "investigating" to find this hit-man, the investigation consists of a series of unlikely information - like some random person lost his wallet and someone used his name to buy a car - which is always right on the money. since there's no real plot and the script is so crappy, you cant expect any real character development, or tension, so instead of creating them through the story, they simply add some disconnected dramatic music, which signals you that something very dramatic is going on , instead of actually creating something dramatic..

the bottom line is that this is a very bad movie, and a complete waste of time which somehow got an incredibly high score for its level, probably because of the cast - and this is exactly what the producers where counting on.
The Jackal (1997): Dir: Michael Caton-Jones / Cast: Bruce Willis, Richard Gere, Sidney Poitier, Diane Venora, Jack Black: Remake of Day of the Jackal that gets reduced to formula and a game of cat and mouse. Bruce Willis stars as the Jackal, an assassin whose disguises mainly consist of wigs but his methods are savage. The C.I.A enlist a criminal played by Richard Gere to help track down Willis. Graphic violence becomes the norm including a scene where someone's arm is blown off. It is obvious the Gere and Willis will meet and have a violent confrontation that will solve absolutely nothing. Director Michael Caton-Jones handles the action but the production is nothing marvelous. Willis and Gere have little screen time together and when they are within the same general location it is indicated with a really lame glare via Willis as if he senses Gere's presence. Willis also phones up some homosexual guy whom he shoots dead for no reason. Also wasting time is Sidney Poitier and Diane Venora who hopefully didn't get their hopes up on this film actually turning out good. Jack Black appears to supply Willis with arms only to have his arm blown off before being finished off with a second blast. This sort of junk has been done countless times but for the two leads it will hopefully lead to a better film to embark upon in the future. The screenplay has more bark than bite. Score: 1 / 10
Sporadically effective, it appears not to have particularly excited the people who made it, and that lackadaisical quality is a drawback.
During a joint FBI/MVD sting, Major Valentina Kozlova (Diane Venora) of the Russian MVD (Ministry for Internal Affairs) shoots and kills mobster Ghazzi Murad (Ravil Isyanov). To retaliate, Murad's brother Terek (David Hayman) hires a shadowy international assassin known only as the 'Jackal' (Bruce Willis) to kill FBI Director Donald Brown (John Cunningham). Meanwhile, FBI deputy director Carter Preston (Sidney Poitier) and an imprisoned IRA sniper/terrorist Declan Mulqueen (Richard Gere), the only one who has ever seen the Jackal, are charged with identifying and stopping him. The Jackal is a loose remake of the 1973 film The Day of the Jackal, both of which are based on a 1971 novel, The Day of the Jackal, by English writer Frederick Forsyth. The novel was adapted by Scottish-American screenwriter Kenneth Ross for the 1973 film. American novelist/screenwriter Chuck Pfarrer loosely adapted Ross' screenplay for The Jackal. $70 million (US). In The Day of the Jackal, he only asked for $500,000 (US) to kill French president Charles de Gaulle. No definitive answer is given in the movie. Viewers have suggested several reasons, such as (1) Lamont got greedy, asking for $100,000 beyond the agreed-upon price of $40,000 and, in all likelihood, would have continued to blackmail the Jackal for more money in the future, (2) Lamont delivered a less-than-perfect weapon (the sighting range was off by 3 millimeters), (3) once he shot off Lamont's arm, the Jackal had to tie up the loose end, (4) Lamont was just plain annoying, and (5) the Jackal basically took out everybody who could become a threat to his identity. After the Jackal fails to assassinate the First Lady (Tess Harper), he makes a run for the Subway, changing his disguise along the way. Declan follows him. When the Jackal notices Declan getting closer to him, he leaps across the train tracks in front of the oncoming train and begins to run back down the tracks. Declan continues to follow until the two finally come face-to-face on the platform where the Jackal has shot a guard and taken a young girl hostage. To save the girl, Declan is forced to drop his gun and kneel. Just as the Jackal is about to shoot Declan, a shot is fired and the Jackal falls to the platform, a bullet in his neck. The Jackal's gun goes off, hitting Declan in the shoulder, and the camera pans to show Isabella (Mathilda May) holding a gun. She goes to help Declan, who notices the dying Jackal slowly pulling a gun from his pocket. Declan grabs Isabella's gun and fires a dozen bullets into the Jackal, killing him. Days later, as Declan and Preston watch, a pine box is lowered in a grave, and Preston wonders whether they'll ever know who the Jackal really was. As Declan and Preston leave the cemetery, Preston apologizes for not being able to get Declan a pardon and reminds him of the key given to him by Isabella. In the final scene, Preston goes off to buy himself a coffee, leaving Declan to walk down the road in the opposite direction. It's called Superpredators by Massive Attack.
