Playboy Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) becomes the new publisher of Los Angeles' "The Daily Sentinel" after the sudden death of his father. Britt's party life is about to change when he and his driver and kung fu expert, Kato (Jay Chou), stop a robbery. With the help of Kato, Britt starts a new career of fighting crime as the masked superhero "The Green Hornet".
Following the death of his father, Britt Reid, heir to his father's large company, teams up with his late dad's assistant Kato to become a masked crime fighting team.
As silly as I feel saying this, Seth Rogen and I have a strikingly similar sense of humor. It's obvious that when Seth and Evan Goldberg sat down to write this they decided to ignore every highly-acclaimed superhero movie ever made and just do whatever the heck they felt like doing. Again, I feel silly saying this, but the only way I can think of to describe this is like when you go to Subway and you just say, "Screw 'em!" and slap the most disgusting combination of ingredients you can think of together and it comes out really, really delicious.

One of the most troubling things for me about this was something the writers can't really control. Why didn't Kato ever get a cool nickname? I think they mentioned it was The Green Mosquito, but they never really gave him a solid nickname and that's just wrong. Kato is the best thing this movie has going for it. You can tell that Jay Chou realizes the ridiculousness of some of the dialog and he seems to enjoy playing along with it. One thing some of those other superhero movies don't have is the sick ninja-sidekick dude, and that's another plus for this. (Which brings up the question of why no Asian superhero movies have been made yet.)

Britt Reid (Seth Rogen's character) is so in love with himself that half the time he doesn't realize he's being insulted by someone, and the other half of the time someone is beating the pulp out of him. Without Kato this movie would've been about five minutes long and had a much sadder ending, because The Green Hornet would've died. But Tony Stark gets away with it, so I guess it's not that big of a stretch.

There's one area this movie undoubtedly scores in- buddy banter. Like I said, I apparently have the same sense of humor as Seth. How many times did Kato and Britt get nut shots on each other? I wish I'd kept count. Aside from a semi-random yet epic fight mid-way through the movie, the relationship the two have (which is quickly defined as heterosexual) is fun and keeps the movie flowing.

It's unconventional and not exactly the first movie I'd go to if asked what the best superhero movie I've ever seen is, but it's really, really fun and worth seeing.

On a side note, if asked what the funniest superhero movie I've ever seen is, I'd say this is DEFINITELY the funniest. My sides hurt from laughing!
Saw this tonight with my two young daughters and wife. It was mildly funny, mostly in a Seth Rogen fashion with "duh" type punchlines - typical of his characters. Abusive use of "sh!t" and "a$$" with a lot of kicks in the balls throughout the movie. Worth seeing once at probably the $1 theater, but I won't be buying it. Intent of the movie was good, execution was poor. My favorite parts were the technology of the car that Kato made and his martial arts and the simple humor of Rogen's character, Brett. What's her name again? Oh yeah, Cameron Diaz was in this movie and played a small part. I've never considered her a talented actress so she made her standard performance, in my opinion. Barely any background or character development in the movie whatsoever; without the cool action cuts, awesome car and mildly entertaining scenes, I would easily rate this movie even lower.
The film is a blast.
It's best to let Rogen himself speak about this subject. From WorstPreviews.com: Seth Rogen, writer and co-star of the upcoming The Green Hornet, told Sci Fi Wire that the film will possess elements of both comedy and action. "To me, the two aren't mutually exclusive," said Rogen. "You can have a big action epic with a lot of funny parts." Green Hornet is a big-screen adaptation of the superhero franchise, which was adapted as a popular 1960s television series and was inspired by the original radio program created in the 1930s. Hornet follows the adventures of Britt Reid, a bored playboy who inherits his father's crusading newspaper, the Daily Sentinel. By night he is a masked hero, fighting crime with his sidekick, Kato, who has incredible martial-arts skills. Rogen, whose film projects to date have been primarily comedic in nature, said that the forthcoming update will evoke other action films that feature an undercurrent of humor. "I've seen the early 'Indiana Jones' movies in theaters, and they kill," Rogen said. "There's laughs throughout the whole thing, and it doesn't feel like a comedy per se. It just feels like something that's trying to solicit reactions from the audience, and we think of movies like 'True Lies' and stuff like that. That's more kind of what we're going for with this." Director Michel Gondry also has said this about the film's tone: "It's an action movie with some comedy in it. The action will be fast and furious and the comedy will come from the dynamic between Kato and Britt Reid." Reportedly, he stepped down to work on a superhero spoof comedy starring Jack Black. It's called "Live With Me" by the Rolling Stones. a5c7b9f00b
