The series tells the story of the aftermath of a global invasion by several races of extraterrestrials that neutralizes the world's power grid and technology, quickly destroys the combined militaries of all the world's countries, and apparently kills over 90% of the human population within a few days.
The chaotic aftermath of an alien attack has left most of the world completely incapacitated. In the six months since the initial invasion, the few survivors have banded together outside major cities to begin the difficult task of fighting back. Each day is a test of survival as citizen soldiers work to protect the people in their care while also engaging in an insurgency campaign against the occupying alien force.
"Falling Skies" is one of those shows that starts out slowly, building up the characters first before the storyline progresses and all hell breaks loose. I'm glad I stuck it out for more than two episodes because I've really gotten into this tale of society six months AFTER the alien invasion has happened. I read a couple of the other reviews and I'm perplexed by the "religious" context some folks are getting out of this series because I just don't see it. There's only one character (Lourdes, well played by Seychelle Gabriel) who makes mention of her faith as a means to survive the horror of the invasion and I believe they may say a prayer at dinner but that's it. The so called religious angle just isn't there. What is there is a kind of subtle but well done reference to the American Revolution, as this show is supposed to take place in Boston. These survivors are likened to the colonial militia or the Minutemen, especially when they raid ammo stores or fight the encroaching aliens while being seriously out numbered. I've got to say Will Patton is excellent as the seemingly hard edged militia captain while Noah Wyle is equally great as the history teacher who keeps Patton's captain from going too hard-core crazy while leading the mixed band of military and civilian survivors to safety. A third shout out to Moon Bloodgood, wonderfully cast as a veterinarian who now must act as field surgeon to this tired and worn out group though she struggles with doubts about her abilities on a daily basis. This show is well cast, well written and definitely a must see if you like your sci-fi with an actual story to it instead of shows where plot line and story are nullified in favor of crap being blown up via special effects every 5 minutes. Give it a chance and watch a few episodes before making your final determination.
I have been a fan of this TV show from the start and feel its time to write a review.

The concept behind the shows narrative is what you may call "stereotypical" or "done before". You may even go as far as saying it is just another ploy to squeeze out the genre. These may be true but the fact of the matter is that nobody can say anything bad about the sheer quality of what you are watching.

Having compelling sidelines along with allot of interesting character profiles you are never left with no questions, and after every episode there is a significant twist to bring you back again. Despite what some may say, the show has many many things that differentiate it from other "alien invasion" shows. Without spoilers, it simply contains such a powerful and emotional set of side stories.

All this would be useless without the sheer quality of the image you are watching. I believe that the powerful narrative in combination with the excellent screen work is all due to the the man himself...Mr Steven Spielberg. Nothing of his in my opinion has been disappointing as they all contain the level of quality in all aspects.

In the end, you love it or you hate it. I have not met anyone who has not liked this TV series even if you believe it is another red apple.

Mike

Jeff We didnt have an image of her dying.. But Scarlett Byrne tweeted "bye lexie".

What's the thing Tom was talking to? Who said "the enemy of my enemy is my friend?" A new Race? My take is that mechs are more efficient from a production standpoint. Less moving parts require less material and less energy to operate. They are machines (mostly at least) and therefore have the same economy of scale as any other machine. Then again, this is sci-fi where there are no limits. Well it looks like they finally threw in a reference to an new alien in the last few episodes, that the Volm acknowledged was the species that was earlier enslaved to become the Skitters. I'm pretty sure the producers just threw than in at the end to make this question go away. a5c7b9f00b
