The situation itself highlights a dilemma: to weigh the instinctive fear of taking the step out against the humiliation of having to climb down. TEN METER TOWER is an entertaining study of the human in a vulnerable position.
On a 10-meter high diving tower, fear of taking the jump is pitted against the personal loss that would arise if you didn't dare. What do we look like when we hesitate and when we make a decision? What does it look like when we overcome our fear?
"Hopptornet" or "Ten Meter Tower" is a Swedish 16-minute documentary short film from 2016, so still fairly new. This one got directors Axel Danielson and Maximilien van Aertryck a pretty nice amount of awards attention, so no surprise, it is the most known work for both of them and all that with such a simple premise. We see several people from both sexes and different age groups stand up on a ten meter tower and watch them fight their inner demons to find out what will prevail: the fear of jumping or the fear of not jumping. It's not 100% necessary to get subtitles, but I would still recommend it for the conversation between the boy and girl early on. The biggest problem I had with the film deals with the concept itself because knowing they are filmed probably had a huge impact on their decision (now they really would be seen as cowards, not just by themselves, but by everybody who watches this one too) unless they weren't told afterward. This is the approach I would have preferred. And the one who doesn't jump at the end was something I didn't really like either, basically only because he was the only one I think. "Freude schöner Götterfunken" is of course always a delight. Good documentary overall that shows us how easy it is to test our limits still these days and how everybody behaves in their very own unique way. Go check it out.
