Your guide to finding the best-fitting bra.
Having a bra that fits perfectly is the key to warding off droopy straps, gaping cups, and even the dreaded double boob. Read on to find out exactly how to measure bra size, plus what do to if your bra size changes and how to combat other common bra issues.
At its core, your bra size is just shorthand for describing the relationship between your rib cage measurement (the band) and your bust measurement (the cup). There are two ways to find out your bra size: One, you can go to a shop (such as a lingerie boutique or department store) or two, you can fit yourself at home with measuring tape.
If you happen to live in a major metropolitan area, getting fitted in a bra shop will let you experiment with variety of brands, sizes, silhouettes, and styles so you can get a sense of what works best for you immediately. You can also get real time feedback from sales staff, which can be incredibly important when you're first learning how a bra should look, fit, and feel. However, a boutique environment can also be intimidating, especially if most of the bras are outside your budget — and, unfortunately, not all boutiques and department stores have the most welcoming environments.
If you'd rather measure yourself in the privacy of your own home, here's a simple four-step formula for finding your bra size.
Wearing a good solid bra that gives you decent lift and support, wrap a measuring tape around your rib cage, just around the band of the bra, and make sure it's parallel to the floor all the way around. This helps to determine your band size. Round up to the nearest even number of inches to arrive at measurement #1.
Next, wrap your measuring tape around your body at the fullest point of your breasts, again making sure the tape is parallel to the floor all the way around, and round up to the nearest even number of inches. This is to determine your cup size, or measurement #2.
Cup sizes are determined by the number of inches between your rib cage and the fullest part of your breasts (i.e. the measurements you just took). Check it out:
If, for example, your rib cage measured 30" and the fullest point of your breasts measured 32", there's a difference of 2". That would mean you are a B cup.
To determine your band size, take measurement #1 (your rib cage) and add 4. Our example of 30 would have (you guessed it) a 34 band size. Put 'em together and the example bra size is 34B. Voilà — that's how to find your bra size!
Know that your bra size is just a starting point — it doesn't mean that every bra you buy in that size will fit. Sometimes, you'll need to size up or down based on something as simple as the color of a bra (did you know black bras tend to run tighter?). It's typical to wear different sizes when you change brands or even when you change styles. Needing to switch to a different bra size isn't a reflection on you or your body; it's just an odd quirk of the bra and panty industry.
So, if you try on a bra in your size and it doesn't fit correctly, here are a couple of trouble-shooting tips to help you adjust your size.
Got gaps? You want the cup to hug your curves. Try going down a size.
Straps too loose or too tight? Both scenarios are the result of a band that's too big. Try sizing down.
Popping out? If your girls are slightly raised on the top or the sides, then try a bigger cup.
Underwire digging in? The underwire should sit flat against your rib cage. If it's digging in, then try a bigger band size.
Let's clear one thing up right now: breasts can come in lots of different sizes and all of those sizes are normal. Whether you're a AA or a KK cup, your breasts are not weird or strange or unusual. There's an incredibly wide range of sizes available, far more than you're likely to see in a mall or lingerie boutique, and that's because there are lots of people out there wearing those sizes. It's also totally normal to have a smaller frame with a larger bust or a larger frame with a smaller bust (and any and every variation in between). There's endless variety to the human body, even if we rarely see it in the media.
It's also completely normal if your breasts are two different sizes. While some people have near-identical breasts, other people's breasts vary by a cup size or more, and neither is the least bit unusual (though you always want to fit to the larger breast when you can).
Our bodies — and therefore our breasts — are constantly changing. Day to day, week to week, month to month, year to year ... your breasts are never exactly the same. Hormones, stress, illness, medication, even the amount of water you drink can all affect breast shape and size in both subtle and noticeable ways. That's sometimes the reason a bra you bought a month ago suddenly doesn't fit quite right — your breasts may have actually changed since you first tried it on.
Regular bra fittings can help you keep up with and be aware of these changes, not only so you can be familiar and comfortable with your body (which has positive benefits far beyond the realm of bra fitting), but also so you can be in the best possible undergarments for yourself. Barring any other conditions (such as, for example, hypersensitivity), a well-fitting bra should never be painful, uncomfortable or constricting. Ideally, you should always feel snug and well-supported.
While bras can last for years with proper care (handwash and hang to dry, using a specialty lingerie wash or baby shampoo to clean), they will eventually wear out. While it's not necessary to follow advice like "replace your bras every six months no matter what," you do want to be aware of the signs of a dead bra: Stretched out elastic that never snaps back, molded cups with permanent dents, wires breaking free of their stitching, a bent hook, etc. These are all signs that your bra might need replacing.
