A MUM has been told that her daughter could “die” after she uploaded a seemingly sweet picture of her 13-year-old daughter kissing their dog.
US reality star Kate Gosselin, 42, from Pennsylvania, shared a photo of teen Alexis being licked on the mouth by their German Shepherd Mak.
Kate shot to fame following her reality show in 2007 called Jon & Kate Plus 8, which documented the daily life of her large family of ten, and she later became a Dancing With The Stars contestant in 2010.
She included the caption: "My human children and my furry children continues to melt my heart on a daily basis!
"Mak just can’t love us enough - and we feel the same about him! We adore him."
However the heartwarming Instagram moment has now taken a sour turn after people have slammed her for allowing Alexis to put herself “at risk”.
One comment said: “Very sweet. I let my fur baby kiss me like that. But it can cause open sores and even lead to death."
Another Instagram user weighed in and said: “For someone who was such a germaphob I’m surprised you allow your dogs to lick your kids mouths.”
Meanwhile one said: “I love my fur babies but I also don’t kiss them on the mouth.... seriously. They lick their own butt....eeek.”
The friendly animals who love to lick faces can and do carry a long list of bacteria which can severely impact human health.
John Oxford, professor of virology and bacteriology at the Queen Mary University in London, explained how the beautiful creatures get bacteria in the first place.
He said: “It is not just what is carried in saliva.
"Dogs spend half their life with their noses in nasty corners or hovering over dog droppings so their muzzles are full of bacteria, viruses and germs of all sorts.”
The strong bacteria have the power to cause a range of dangerous diseases, some deadly.
Capnocytophaga Canimorsus is a bacteria that lives in a dog's saliva.
It has the power to cause fatal infections including sepsis, which can ultimately lead to organ failure and even death.
Symptoms of Capnocytophaga Canimorsus include fever, chills, sweats and a lack of energy.
Ringworm is said to be one of the easiest infections dogs can pass on and children are at a greater risk of catching these infections from a dog's lick.
Some commenters on Kate’s Instagram post argued that a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s, however an expert has dispelled that myth.

Dog expert Marty Becker said: "All you have to do is look, watch, smell and you’ll realise that is not true.
"You know, we give each other a peck on the cheek when we say hello, they give each other a peck on the rear end.”
