But their meet-ups soon turned into nightmare for the boy. The older teen, who was 17 at the time, molested him frequently by grabbing his private parts.
Despite being confronted by the victim's friends, the offender managed to get away.
And he soon set his sight on a second victim - a 10-year-old boy. He repeatedly harassed the child to send nude pictures of himself but was rejected.
This time, however, the teen was caught after the child's mother came across the text messages that he had sent to her son.
On Monday (Dec 17), the offender, now 18, pleaded guilty to one count each of molestation and sexual exploitation of a child. He cannot be named due to a gag order to protect his victims' identities.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Lai told the court that the offender first met the 13-year-old boy at a school camp in January last year, but lost contact with him and reconnected at a barbecue event seven months later. They frequently hanged out at the younger boy's home.
But the older teen started molesting the boy later that year.
On Jan 5 this year, the victim told his senior school mates about his ordeal and they decided to confront the offender.
The older teen was waiting for the boy at the latter's home when the group turned up to confront him.
The offender called the police hotline, claiming that he had been assaulted and managed to run away.
Court documents did not state what happened following the call to the police hotline.
Soon after, the teenager befriended the 10-year-old boy as they were in the same student care programme.
On March 21, he started sending the boy text messages, asking him to send nude pictures of himself.
DPP Lai told District Judge May Mesenas: "The victim replied 'no' and did not do what the accused asked of him. For the next few days, the accused continued to harass the victim by asking him to send these photos to him.
"At one point, the accused even offered the victim $10 to have a video call with him, for the victim to show the accused his private parts. The victim continued to reject the accused's requests."
The boy's mother saw the text messages on March 27 and alerted her son's school. She also took her son to a neighbourhood police centre to lodge a report.
On Monday, Judge Mesenas called for a report to assess the offender's suitability for probation. He will be back in court on Jan 7.
For molestation, he can be jailed for up to five years and fined or caned. First-time offenders convicted of sexually exploiting a child can be jailed for up to five years and fined up to $10,000.

A 16-year-old rich kid with a penchant for limited edition trainers - and money to burn thanks to his billionaire dad - has allowed cameras into his jaw-dropping family home in Dubai.
Rashed Saif Belhasa, who also goes by the name 'Money Kicks' on Instagram and boasts 1.5million followers, lives in the UAE with his family in a mansion so vast they use a golf cart to get around the grounds - which includes their own private zoo filled with exotic animals.
Rashed flaunted his extravagant lifestyle on Channel 4's World's Weirdest Homes on Wednesday night, and told how he plans to follow in his construction magnate father's footsteps by amassing a fortune of his own.
His private zoo, which can be seen from the enormous living room, houses lions, tigers, panthers, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, and bears; and they receive regular visits from A-List celebrities - some of whom Rashed has named animals after.
Money Kicks is the proud owner of a vast shoe collection boasting limited edition Yeezys, Bapes and Air Jordans, all stored in bespoke cases and reported to be worth an estimated $1million (£785,000).

The zoo has over 500 exotic animals that are owned by Rashed's father, billionaire UAE businessman Saif Ahmed Belhasa, who started collecting the animals from other private zoos that were neglected.
Rashed’s pets have names like Versace the lion, Gucci and Dior the orangutans, Armani the chimp, Fendi, Yeezy, Paris Hilton, Jackie Chan, and a pair of giraffes named Bert and Ernie.

The YouTube celebrity and budding entrepreneur's zoo is a popular destination for celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Ronaldo, Floyd Mayweather, Rihanna, Paris Hilton, and Jackie Chan - who have had animals named after them.
UAE national Saif Ahmed Belhasa is a construction tycoon presiding over the sprawling Saif Belhasa Group.
The group comprises a large network of companies with interests spanning construction, real estate, technology, travel, tourism and hospitality, and the automotive industries.
Saif, who is one of the wealthiest businessmen in the UAE, studied Business Management at Al Ain University in 1988 before studying for his master's in the USA, and today his net worth is estimated to be at least £1.5billion.
In an interview with The National, he said the secret to his success was getting up early to the office - and said he always arrives at the office by 6am.
The animal lover has holiday homes in Évian-les-Bains, France, and Palm Jumeirah, Dubia, and claims to have once owned a collection of 60 horses.
Asked by the filmmaker during the documentary if he's the only child in the world with his own private zoo, Rashed played it cool.
‘Yeah you could say that. I don’t like to show off,' he said.
He explained that because the zoo isn't open to the public, the family does not make a profit - and any suggestions that the animals are mistreated are shut down.
‘We take care of all our animals. When I went to Kenya, I see a lot of lions dying because they eat once a month and here they eat every single day.'

Rashed made headlines last year for receiving a brand new £200,000 Ferrari car in Louis Vuitton Supreme logos for his birthday.
Despite being too young to drive the car, as the legal age in Dubai is 18, he enlisted company FoilX to apply the customised wrap on the supercar, which was originally yellow.
The teenager's YouTube channel and Instagram page showcase his lavish lifestyle, showing off his latest purchases alongside meeting celebrities and sports stars alike.
He has an entire room in his house dedicated to his trainer collection which features a pair of trainers worn by footballer Paul Pogba, one of only 14 pairs made.
