The uncle of Muhadh Ishmael, 17, told him to go on a "shopping trip" with four young men who eventually murdered him.
A young intersex man in Kenya was mutilated and murdered by family members because of his gender identity.
Muhadh Ishmael, 17, died on December 21 of blood loss after being castrated.
Born in Malindi, a rural town about 70 miles north of Mombasa, Muhadh was given a female name at birth. He was never accepted by his family, who called him a “curse” and made him wear a buibui, the traditional shawl worn by Muslim women in East Africa.
Muhadh was put in the custody of his uncle after his parents died in 2014.
According to reports, he was confronted by the uncle, and told to join four young men on a “shopping trip.”
While in the car, the men told Muhadh he was going to be killed. He was drugged and woke up in a forest, in a pool of his own blood and his penis cut off.

A passing motorist took Muhadh to Malindi District Hospital, where he died from blood loss. (Treatment was reportedly stopped doctors because he could not pay his hospital bill of 25,780 Ksh, or about $260.)
Muhadh’s body was not accepted by his family for burial, so friends are collecting donations for a funeral at 76crimes@gmail.com
