The 11th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day, whose mission is to help raise awareness of Down syndrome, was celebrated on Monday.
Elena Mazzeo, 16, of Hillsborough, is a shining example of a teen with Down syndrome who is excelling at everything she does. Elena resides with her parents, Mark and Donna Mazzeo, and three siblings. Elena has been a student in Hillsborough schools since preschool and is currently a ninth-grader at Hillsborough High School.
Elena was honored at the Hillsborough Township Committee Meeting on March 9. Elena received a proclamation from Mayor Frank DelCore in honor of her recent accomplishments in art and modeling.
“Elena created an art piece at Hillsborough Middle School last year that we donated to Artworks, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of pediatric patients through the power of creative arts,” explained Donna Mazzeo, Elena’s mother. “Her painting was auctioned at ArtWorks' annual gala last October for $1,600. These monies will help fund an entire summer art program for chronically ill children in local hospitals."
Mazzeo said the experience of being honored at the township meeting is something Elena will not soon forget.
"The mayor is really nice!" Elena said.
"It was a full house that night because four new police sergeants were being sworn in and some teams were being honored," Donna said. "The mayor called our family to the front as he read the proclamation aloud. You could see the pride and joy on Elena’s face.
“The crowd clapped when they learned about Elena’s artwork and her modeling. After the proclamation was read, I was given the opportunity to say a few words. It was an honor for Elena to receive this recognition and I wanted to be sure to thank her wonderful teachers, instructional assistants, the staff and the Hillsborough Township School administration for their support in sharing our vision for Elena.”
According to her mother, Elena has not had formal training in art, but her maternal grandmother was an artist.
“So, Elena's artistic talent is definitely a part of her designer genes,” Donna said.
“I submitted Elena’s pastel painting for Artwork’s Express Yourself Exhibit at the Montclair Art Museum in November 2014. After the exhibit, her painting was selected to be a part of Artworks' traveling art show to be displayed throughout New Jersey in local businesses, various community organizations and malls.
In March 2015, Elena was featured as ArtWorks' Artist of the Month in honor of World Down Syndrome Month. On Oct. 22, Elena and I had the pleasure of attending ArtWorks' annual gala and auction in New York City. Elena was invited on stage to hold her painting as part of the live auction. This was a major accomplishment in itself because Elena had developed stage fright and was anxious to be in front of a crowd. She stood on stage with such pride as her painting was auctioned. The winning bid was $1,600.”
A couple purchased her painting for their daughter.
“Elena was beaming as she was congratulated by people in the audience," Donna said.
The money collected for her painting will fund an entire summer for children in the ArtWorks program.
"This is a perfect example of what can happen when an individual is given the opportunity to explore their talents and dreams and tap into their potential," Donna said. "The focus that night was on Elena’s abilities, not her disability. It was a beautiful way to pay it forward because other children benefited from Elena’s talent and the opportunity she was given.”
She said that Elena modeled in New York in November for the National Down Syndrome Society, along with 40 other individuals with Down syndrome of various ages.
“The photos were on display at their annual gala in New York earlier this month at the BB King Blues Club in New York. The theme was Rockin’ in the National Down Syndrome Society studios. Elena was dressed as Joan Jett,” Donna said.
DelCore said the township appreciates the opportunity to honor its residents.
"It is our honor to recognize the achievements of our residents here in Hillsborough,” he said. “When the opportunity presents itself to have that recognition lead to awareness, as in Elena's case, we further welcome that opportunity."
Elena enjoys school, spending time with her siblings, making videos on her iPad, listing to music, watching TV, and spending time with friends.
“I like school and I love my teachers. My favorite subjects are reading, math and gym,” said Elena. “I love to sing, hang out with my friends and go on my iPad and iPhone.”
Elena’s mother said her daughter lights up a room.
“When I look at Elena, I see a beautiful young lady with the pretty long brown hair, the most beautiful green eyes and a million-dollar smile,” Donna said.
“She loves to laugh and joke. She’s a typical teen with likes, dislikes and dreams. Our dream for Elena is the same dream that we have for all of our children. We want Elena to have opportunities to explore her individual talents, abilities, strengths and to maximize her potential. We celebrate Elena for the amazing individual that she is. We have always looked for opportunities for Elena to participate in different activities and inclusive programs.”
